Do you know Stanislaw Lem, the fabulous Polish #SciFi author?

He wrote several stories about #robots and artificial intelligence (real one, not #ai).

Among many others, I love the hilarious "The Washing Machine Tragedy", as it highlights the relationship between #technology, #capitalism and #law.

Written in 1963, it foreshadows prophetically many of current developments.

In the story, two corporations begin to "enhance" their washing machines with all kind of "smart" tech to the point,

His book Chain of Chance is well worth reading for almost any young person as a valuable lesson about the power of large numbers. It's a short book, but it illustrates the principle so clearly. I wish everyone were required to read it in fifth grade or so. It would help society be a little harder to fool.

I'm feeling a little depressed, but not at all surprised by how many of the #10authors5bookseach lists featured only male authors, while I only saw one list that had only female ones. Of the remainder, most had mostly male authors with only one or two women. Sigh. On the other hand, it was nice to see quite a few male-presenting people posting lists that were fairly rich in female authors. More than you might find on a different platform. #bookstodon #gender #sexism

Today's is rotisserie chicken, with sweet peppers, campari tomatoes, and avocado, seasoned with white cheese, preserved Meyer lemons, and Greek yogurt. Muy tasty!

temporal_spider, to cooking
@temporal_spider@masto.ai avatar

All the instructions I have seen for making preserved lemons say to cut them in quarters without going all the way through. But when I use them, I always have to spend time mincing them to my desired consistency. This time I got smart and used the shredding blade on the Cuisinart. Now all I have to do is dip in my spoon.

Blend salt lemon with Greek yogurt, shallot infused olive oil, and champagne vinegar, and honey, you've created a fantastic salad dressing! #cooking #lactofermentation

temporal_spider,

@thepoliticalcat while I am completely ignorant of this case, if this were a game of Clue, I would guess that the two men had a sexual relationship, and the victim intended to go public. I would guess "sexual torture" means the murderer put something in the victim's ass. Because homosexuality is a sin (in their tiny minds,) so if he degrades his victim, he erases his sin. This is what shame does to people.

Knitting socks two at a time with magic loop might be easier if I had a longer cable, so far it works but as I increase for gusset it may become harder.

For one sock, the 80 cm cable was no issue though.

If it proves too hard, I guess I'll have to look into switching cables mid project. At least I do have a longer cable at hand.

This is kind of the opposite of the #yarnuary travel for yarn prompt: I'm really hoping that this llama I was given by a friend last year, who now lives on my farm, will give me some hyperlocal wool when it's finally warm enough to shear him in May.

I've never processed raw wool or spun wool, but I'm willing to learn in order to make a sweater from grass that I grew!

Any tips on processing raw wool? Anyone have experience with llama wool, specifically?

temporal_spider,
@temporal_spider@masto.ai avatar

@sundogplanets
I haven't worked with llama fiber, but I have worked with alpaca, and found it so incredibly dusty that no amount of washing was enough. Even after multiple, intensive sprayings with the kitchen sprayer at full blast in a colander, there was still fine dust on my fingers and in my lungs when I tried to spin it. My tubes are pretty sensitive, so I had to give the fiber to someone else.

I noticed this issue in myself long before I was diagnosed with ME/CFS. Nobody would listen. I kept getting told I need to exercise more. As a former farmer who was raising bull breed stock, getting enough exercise wasn't the problem. Too much was.

I have had me/cfs for two decades, and I have learned some terrible lessons. Remember the pushup challenge? You were supposed to do a few more pushups every day for a few weeks. I did it, and it was going great. Until one day I couldn't do any. And I've never recovered, or regained the strength I had when I started.

Are any physicists or astrophysicists interested in studying my cat?

I have weighed her many times. She's just over 2.8kg (6 pounds)

The diameter of her smallest paw is at least 3 cm... so the area is something like 6 to 9 cm^2

I simply cannot account for the PSI with this geometry.

Recently it was hypothesized that cats can access a 4th spatial dimension... could this be how she has crushed my internal organs?

How is she able to pin a grown man to a couch for hours?

There's an aikido skill where you can make yourself immovable. I'm fairly sure they learned it from a cat. My void kitty, who has left the mortal plain, was able to suddenly become extremely heavy if she sensed I needed to pee.

Susanne Visch of LaVisch designs - @LaVisch - finds it important to provide user-friendly instructions for interesting patterns. In most cases, the patterns feature both written and charted instructions, with detailed explanations of the techniques used. Often there are more detailed explanations in the form of step-by-step photo tutorials.

Our featured pattern is Robijn, isn't she gorgeous?

Who do you think does the best version of Spanish Bombs?

Here's the choices:

  1. The Clash - Spanish Bombs (Original)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ul0uJfhywW8

  2. Ceci Bastida - Spanish Bombs
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H81alHWi0H4

  3. Melodee Fernandez - Spanish Bombs

Honestly, all three are just so good. I'd love to know your opinions.

The Clash is, of course awesome. But Ms. Fernandez' voice is so moving.

atomicpoet, to random

Last time I was in Mexico, I heard an acoustic cover of The Clash's song "Spanish Bombs". It was almost as good as -- perhaps better than -- the original. I remember three things about it: a woman sang it, it was slow, and had some accordion in it.

For years, that version of Spanish Bombs has been living rent free in my head, and I can't find it anywhere on the Internet. It's been haunting me like a ghost.

If someone from Latin America or Spain knows about that song, please let me know who makes it. I need to hear it again!

Grace's glorious tail feathers. They're asymmetrical, much longer on the right side. She's a slinky little feather boa of a cat. In addition to being the feline love of my life, she is also a generous provider of cat wool for me to spin.

Happiness! I have stress-tested my little sample by rubbing it vigorously while it was bone dry, and to my delight, it felts instead of pilling. I was worried because these kitties' fur pills up on all our clothing, but I think the wool is going to provide some discipline. Now I can proceed with my spinning project, and then onto the knitting. # catsofmastodon

A while ago, I posted a sample of yarn I spun with fur combed from my two floofy cats. I've decided to blend it with some wool. This is a sample of floof with white Jacob wool in the pattern called "cat paws," from which I plan to make a variation of the 10 stitch blanket. Now I just have to do some abrasion testing to see how much it will pill. I fear it will pill badly, but we'll see.
