Self striping shawl progress!

I swatched a few different lace options but they all felt like I was fighting with the stripes, so I decided to highlight them instead with a simple slip stitch+purl pattern. So far it feels like it's made the mid-row colour transitions look pretty natural too! 🧶

Completely ridiculous question, @weaving and #weaving folk:

I’ve warped up enough cotton for two towels on my RHL. But with the back roller taking up finished cloth… how do I actually know when I hit 28” of woven cloth? (Should I have tied something on a strand at the right spot when I was warping?)

Signed, a befuddled and new weaver!

terri,
@terri@social.afront.org avatar

@jonobie for my rigid heddle, I just undo the brake on the side with the finished cloth and pull it out to measure it.

The stripes aren't wide enough to do what I had in mind first, so time to rip back and rethink a bit!

This is the winter club colour from Gauge Dye Works and I promised myself the subscription on the condition that I not just stick all three yarns in my stash, so I'm feeling motivated to get something that works before the next colour arrives next month.

Today has been cognitively difficult (lots of unrelated problems) but I'm off the clock for the work parts at least so time for a spinning break even though what I really need is a nap.

This is the part of knitting where I feel asymptotically close to finishing but there's still a lot to do. Need to knit and sew the pockets, weave in the ends, add buttons and block it but... Kiddo's rainbow sweater looks nearly done!

Rainbow sweater has the first sleeve bound off, and I finished my free review copy of The Everlasting Road.

It took me a bit to get into this book but once I did it was so good: I particularly enjoyed the blending of game metaphors and indigenous mythic figures, while weaving through stories about grief and griefers and AI and love and loss. Although this is a series it felt standalone enough, but I do want to go get the first book out now!

Was knitting this sock in the car today and realized the needles were backwards and that's why my hand was starting to hurt. 🤦🏻‍♀️ So I'm swapping them before I forget!

(For anyone wondering how knitting needles can be backwards: for my on-the-go sock I use a short asymmetric circular with one long and one short needle. The short one is perfect on the left but makes my hand a bit crampy if I use it on the right.)

My handspun cowl is off the needles and was great for last night's dog walk and this morning's!

Also in the daylight you can appreciate my gently faded rainbow hair. I love the pastels I'm getting right now.

When you start a colorwork sweater with fingering-weight yarn, you have to relax into the mindset of: “I will be knitting this sweater for the next thousand years, and that’s okay 😌”

(Pattern is Dark Academia by Sharon Hartley / riverroadknits)

@Violinknitter I'm so tempted by that pattern but I fear that I'd be sick of it in the months it would take to finish!

The quilt sandwich has begun! I only got three lines done before the Dread Pirate kid made it home but making space and vacuuming the floor and pinning it all together was the hard part.

Tatting month continues*. I'm still bad at remembering to read the pattern carefully and I realized today that I missed some picot joins that I'm not going back to fix, but my hands are starting to fall into a comfortable rhythm now.

  • I'm cycling through my less frequent crafts each month of 2024. Last month's focus was spinning.

Chunky handspun cowl continues now that the yarns are dry! I spun this one a bit thicker than the others, but I don't think it matters. 💕

Two more colours to go! But it looks perfectly valentines-y right now so I think I'm stopping here for today 💝

I'm definitely going to regret asking but...

What are people using for user authentication in Python web crap nowadays? My favourite thing I ever used was a long dead project called persona, but I've more recently used django.

The project I have in mind involves a game web app and people will want logins of some sort to store game data, which is probably mostly going to be a bunch of numbers collected over the course of a year or so.

I haven't done #GameDev in forever but I feel like making something!

High fiber soup 🍲

That's the last two handspun minis for the chunky cowl I'm making! This has been such a delight to make and it's incredibly satisfying to watch my stash get used up so fast. Pity I don't really need more bulky yarns right now!

So I'm reading this book and there's a character who's ADHD and she's having this moment where she's totally got a plan to turn her life around and she's gonna do yoga every morning and and and. (It lasts for 2 days or something.)

But of course since I'm reading this, when I get up to make a cup of tea I load the dishwasher while I'm waiting for the kettle (normal) and wipe down the counter, then I decide to wash and refill the hummingbird feeders and I remember I was supposed to move some money to another account and then after I do that I can't find my notebook to check it off my todo list and add a reminder to check it in 3 business days and I find a missing measuring tape while I'm looking and put that away and and and...

Anyhow, it's like an hour later and I finally sat down again, thinking "oh I'll bet my tea is cold" only to realize I never actually made any tea so I have to get up again. 🫖

Which is all a long way of saying I'm enjoying "Last Call at the Local" and apparently a little sleep deprived and having a week. 😴 🧠

(I'm not adhd but look, I have a PhD, we know that my brain probably isn't 100% neurotypical. "If your hyperfixation lasts 5-7 years, don't see a doctor -- get a phd and become one!")

@JoscelynTransient lol, I know. I'm actually not like this most of the time but certain types of kid-related sleep deprivation definitely bring it out, hence why I do have a notebook and coping mechanisms (and sometimes, no tea). 😅

Tatting month continues! I'm enjoying some new colours from my crochet stash, and it's probably just as well they're a bit bigger because I had to pick back a lot of mistakes today. But that was good practice too, I guess! I miss the fixable nature of knitting, though.

I did all the math and decided these would be far enough apart that it wouldn't bother me, but of course now that I've actually sewn them I'm questioning my choices.

And now back to my regularly scheduled sweater knitting. Kiddo's rainbow sweater has made it to purple. 🌈💜

Also Tin Can Knits is having a buy one get one free sale so I should probably buy the Classic Cardigan pattern for next time I do this so I don't have to do the mental gymnastics to split the Flax pattern down the front. 😅 What should my second pattern be? It seems I own a lot of the ones I intend to knit already!

Impromptu weaving night to use different muscles! (I think I've been playing too much Palworld with my kid; my right hand is a bit sore.)

I'm slowly reaching the end of the warp and as much as I like this colour combo, I'm tired of all my pictures looking the same!

February's craft is tatting!

I made myself a this year to revisit or deep dive on some crafts that I don't do as often.

I learned to shuttle tat from a friend but got more into it after a class at my local yarn shop. It used to be my go to backup travel craft because it's so small to pack, but it's been several years since I really did any. So here's my slightly wonky first attempt in a while. It's a bit lopsided, but it's a start!

Finished spinning the next mini for my chunky cowl! But I mostly took this picture so you could get a glimpse of my new rainbow mat. (a gift from my mother in law who probably didn't know why it was on my wishlist!)

The rainbow mat keeps the wheel from slipping on the hardwood floor. I had to upgrade my previous no-slip setup because my kindergartener loves to stop in and treadle as fast as he can.

I mean, sure, I could train him not to touch the wheel, but it's sitting where it is to capitalize on my own urge to touch it when it's within easy reach, so I'd rather lean in to letting him enjoy it. I haven't managed to get him to focus long enough to learn drafting, but he has helped me ply yarns or make messy art yarns on occasion!

Gauge: about 2 stitches per inch

Chunky handspun is hilariously fun to knit sometimes. I just cast on 42 stitches for a cowl (or the meaning of life) and I normally make 60 stitch socks 😂
