I keep brooding on the way the xz backdoor was enabled in significant part via weaponizing the FOSS culture of shitty behavior and abuse.

Yes, there're other pathologies at work here (the big tech capitalist pillaging of the commons, etc).

But what is striking is that the uncool, mean standards of FOSS conduct that many of us have decried for years, & that many defended as authentic, tough, etc., ended up not just being exclusionary loser behavior, but a significant attack surface.

The IDF has killed seven World Central Kitchen aid workers traveling in a convoy of three vehicles. World Central Kitchen aid workers are clearly identified by their clothing and their vehicles always contain highly visible large logos. This isn't imo a mistake. They were targeted.

@mikewaghorne The US has ~600 rear cargo door heavy lift aircraft like C-130s & C-17s. We've never used more than 4 of them on a single day for the airdrop operation and never dropped more than 50,000 meals. We've never flown more than a single flight a day despite the airbase in Jordan being ~140 miles away.

We're also dropping MREs instead of Humanitarian Daily Rations, which is bad for a number of reasons.

We're sending Israel an endless stream of bombs and next to no food for Gaza.

reminder that if Netanyahu & the US gets away with this in — targeting journalists, targeting hospitals and schools and refugee camps, starving millions of children, mass murder on the scale of tens of thousands, shutting down press, internet and information, killing humanitarian workers, preventing crucial aid convoy, firing on people receiving aid, and planning resettlement of regions based on ethnic identity — these methods will be normalized & advanced by other western nations & govts

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

We are not just saying the rogue governments of Israel and Biden must be stopped. we are saying that modern ethnic cleansing that defies our commonly agreed upon global humanitarian principles is unacceptable and will not be tolerated anywhere. Netanyahu must be tried for war crimes as soon as possible, and those in the US government aiding and abetting him must also face accountability for their crimes against humanity. This is why it makes sense to resign from Biden’s state dept asap

BREAKING: Forest defenders have launched a tree sit to stop old growth logging on federal Bureau of Land Management land in Southern Oregon. Community members are opposing the Poor Windy timber sale, which targets thousands of acres of mature and old growth forest.

The timber sale is just one of countless projects the BLM has proposed across the region that will clearcut mature and old growth forests, flying directly in the face of commitments made by the federal administration.

Forest defenders are calling for the immediate cancellation of this sale and an end to all logging on public lands.

Here's a fun AI story: a security researcher noticed that large companies' AI-authored source-code repeatedly referenced a nonexistent library (an AI "hallucination"), so he created a (defanged) malicious library with that name and uploaded it, and thousands of developers automatically downloaded and incorporated it as they compiled the code:

I don't disregard stop lights or stop signs. I also don't sit around waiting for imaginary cars. If I assess that there are no cars coming or that they are far enough away that they won't get near me before I clear the intersection, then I go. If you are jealous because you have to wait, buy a bicycle.

"AFN Midwest Region on April 20, 2024 will be hosting the Ohio Racist Campout.

"This is a great opportunity for people from across the states of Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and many other states to meet like-minded people and enjoy a weekend of racial celibration for the Führers Birthday[sic].

"We will have guest speakers, survival education classes, and BBQ."

Yesterday an SUV nearly ran me over when I was crossing a street. There were around 20 seconds on the count down and it was obvious that it was a red light.

I stopped in the intersection after it very unwillingly stopped, and glared at the driver.

Ever since I personally witnessed two people being killed in front of me, as a pedestrian, here in SF, I have been radicalized. It’s a big fucking deal and it’s unthinkable to me that pols don’t think so.

quotable quote (by me): "If my five years of public service have taught me anything, it's that our jobs are never about using the latest technology: it's always about using stable and safe technology, as far as possible, to deliver services that the public needs. Our jobs are not to use AI or to be AI researchers or experts, but if down the line, the field has proven itself so thoroughly that it's a vital part of our work, then it will be one of many tools we use."

As we hear reports that it will take 10 years (🤯) to replace the 1.6 mile Francis Scott Key bridge in Baltimore, remember that China built the Danyang-Kunshan bridge and Qingdao Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in 4 years each.

Danyang-Kunshan Bridge is 102 miles long, and 100 ft above the water.

Jiaozhou Bay Bridge is 16 miles and 623 ft tall, earthquake and typhoon proof, and can withstand a direct strike from a 300,000 ton cargo ship. That last point is unfortunately topical.

Every day I find out new problems I didn't know about with US infrastructure.

Freeways collapsing and in disrepair. Contractors cutting corners on concrete quality making apartment buildings collapse. Train tracks not built to withstand heavy use. Sewage systems built long after New York's, needing to be replaced long before New York's. Airport runways cracking. Hyperloop tunnels to nowhere. Very expensive "Border wall" racist vanity projects that do nothing.

Etc.

BYD responded to the mask shortage, by going from "We don't make masks! We make Electric Vehicles and batteries!" To "We are the largest N95 and surgical mask producer in the world!" in under a month.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DjdPTgWjf60

When the pandemic started, the US didn't have enough ICU capacity. So we "triaged," and sent Black and Brown people home to die. China responded by building multiple entire hospitals in under 10 days.

There is no Chinese President in history that is as corrupt as Trump was. It's not close.

We're still understanding who paid for Supreme Court justice vacations. We have national guardsmen in NYC subways, even though the mayor and governor know the subway is safe. We have senators smuggling gold bars.

The belief that the US government is somehow less corrupt than the Chinese government, is just not based on reality. It's based on vibes and sinophobia.

mekkaokereke,
@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io avatar

@UncivilServant @McBeth @hazelweakly

Building the Baltimore bridge in under 10 years is not something that is only possible if you have a "corrupt or authoritarian government." Building quickly has nothing to do with China at all. It has to do with the US accepting the fact that we are not very good at this anymore. That's the first step required for real change.

Our arrogance and belief that anyone who's better than us must have cheated, is the biggest obstacle to us getting good at infra.

mekkaokereke,
@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io avatar

@faraiwe

"China is not as good at us at building weapons of war!" 100% factual! Our killing machines are far superior! We are the best at war, and making war machines! USA! USA! napalm and brimstone smell intensifies

"China has a housing bubble." Again, facts! We had 1 too a few decades ago. And then a crypto bubble. We have bubbles.

None of this negates the fact that baselined against the EU, China is very good at building critical infrastructure fast+cheap, and the US is very bad at it.

MisuseCase,
@MisuseCase@twit.social avatar

@donaldball @mekkaokereke @UncivilServant @McBeth @hazelweakly Part of the reason we don’t built big infrastructure projects so fast anymore is that, back when we did, stuff like massive corruption in smoky back rooms, labor law violations, and bulldozing whole low-income (also typically minoritized) neighborhoods was usually how we got it done.
