you ever do that thing where there's some property or behaviour you're generally aware of but generally just ignore as not being particularly consequential, and then you design something where that property is a limiting factor, so you study it in a lot of detail and then become cursed with the knowledge that you really should be accounting for it pretty much everywhere

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

anyway don't learn about inrush current control for capacitors, it will ruin your day

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@SteveSyfuhs no, I refuse

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@SteveSyfuhs can't scare me there, I've been around long enough to remember dumping NT hashes with Cain & Abel :D

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@callum_snowden hard on the caps for sure, and also problematic for a bunch of other reasons, e.g. if you've got a fastblow fuse anywhere in the path.

not unusual to see high tens if now low hundreds of amps in a big spike during that time.

@wirepair oof. hope you feel better soon.

With the introduction of Dolby Surround 7.1 in 2010, Sony were eager to put out a full home theater system. One of their early models, the HT-A7.100, included a revolutionary evolution to the standard stereo jack: the 7.1 surround jack, allowing all 8 channels to be sent over one cable.

I have a hard time understanding speech not because I have bad hearing, but my mind is slow to comprehend what I heard. I need subtitles because my mind processes text better than speech.

Isn’t it also weird that I also need to hear myself speaking to remember what I said?

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@haruka this is common in folks with ADHD. I use subtitles a lot despite having pretty good hearing.

new Delta Heavy tune.

I'm somewhat indifferent to the drops and heavy wub-wub bits in this, but I love the guitar intro. reminds me a bit of Three Days Grace for some reason.

oh I meant to say, I'll most likely (barring scheduling problems) be doing a DJ set at EMF! high energy drum and bass stuff, naturally.

timing is TBD but it'll be at the nullsector.

will be weird performing live in front of people instead of just like... at my desk at home.

I love this tune.

(an admission which surprises nobody who listens to my sets)

wenn die DDR so gut war wo ist die QDR

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@azonenberg @nota ohh, so kinda like QSPI. neat.

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@azonenberg @nota now I'm confused again. when I said "kinda like QSPI" I meant in the sense that they're increasing bus parallelism at the exact same transmission rate instead of sending more data per second down the same number of lines. is that not what they're doing? the "alternating" part isn't clear to me here (I also don't know what BL=4 means)

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@azonenberg @nota right, so the "QDR" part is that they're giving you separate ports for read/write, effectively making it full duplex (subject to command patterns) instead of half duplex? but the signalling on the lines themselves is still just DDR in terms of being sampled at both edges, right?

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@azonenberg @nota so is QDR (the signalling thing, not the multi-port misnomer) actually used for anything? it seems pointless to me but sometimes things surprise me.

I saw this voltmeter at the electronics flea market. Look at that massive probe! It looks like you need to check your back blast before using it.
Apparently it's for REALLY high voltages? Like, 3kV?

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@foone you're probably an order of magnitude low on that number

artemist, to random German
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

they should make factorio but more annoying (power lines have a max current carrying capacity and resistive losses, you can create transformer substations for long-distance 250kV power lines, motors create reactive power)

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@artemist the Power Overload mod sorta does this. each tier of pole has a load limit and you need to use transformers to separate your networks out.

Terrible idea: Christian programmer who comments their code with references to Bible verses which are applicable to the code's situation

gsuberland,

@foone there's a guy on YouTube who does this occasionally, although he's Jewish so he quotes the old testament

me: "i like it how the entire LLVM project is one monorepo"
her: "when are you going to compile the entirety of LLVM to WebAssembly?"
me: "yes."
her: "... I said that as a joke"

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@whitequark they call it clang because it's so heavy that it makes a clang sound when you drop it.
