hot take: BGA packages should not have mixed pitch.

ST's TFBGA361 package for the STM32MP1 uses 0.5mm pitch for the majority of pins, except the center power region which uses 0.65mm pitch.

I get that part of the idea is to allow bigger vias for lower PDN impedance, but they're fitting 77 pins (9x9 with corners removed) into a 15x15 space and could easily space them at the 0.5mm pitch with VSS separating the VDD pins from the IO pins.

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

@GossiTheDog I can't keep track of which of the batman-extended-universe games flopped at this point so I'm going to assume the sales numbers are bad.

thoughts:

They badly needed a good showcase as the Xbox brand is in self inflicted turmoil... and they got it I think. It was great.

Lots of big games and new IP to look forward to.

Not announcing a Pro console when PS5 are about to announce one for this year will probably lead to further console sales erosion but I think they've just given up on hardware now.

@GossiTheDog imo refocusing on getting better gameplay and features out of the same hardware when graphics hardware performance per watt has largely stagnated is a good move.

It's funny how I've seen multiple people talking about how Microsoft Recall doesn't take pictures of DRM media, as if this was a conscious decision the Recall team made, and not just a natural consequence of how screenshots already work on modern windows.

gsuberland,
@gsuberland@chaos.social avatar

@foone yeah it's literally just a case of "the DXGI stack can't see it because the image isn't decoded until it hits the hardware", and naturally they're using DXGI for the screenshot stuff because that's where everything gets composited.

For points, guess his length from the tip of his back feet to tip of his front. Inches or cm are good.

LB: not sure I fully agree with "must fade into irrelevance" because, y'know, realities of the world and computing, but cutting your cloud spend at MS and telling them exactly why is precisely the kind of thing that will make them reconsider their creepy security-destroying abuse-enabling features.

If you've got footage from #emfcamp #NullSector, please send me links!

Watching the lasers from the control booth is fun, but I always love seeing what it's like from the audience's perspective too.

I had a blast DJ'ing at #emfcamp on Sunday night. Went very well considering it was my first time doing it in person instead of on the internet.

@jtruk caught this absolutely incredible slow motion footage during it, which might be my favourite EMF shot of all time. Charles, Rob, and Dimitri really nailed the effect timings. phenomenal.

is anyone familiar with a method of extracting a stillframe image from a particular timestamp of a video that considers temporal information from neighbouring frames, in order to produce a still image that looks more like what we perceive during playback? non gen-ML based solutions strongly preferred.

regular frame extraction tends to have blocking artifacts and other quality issues that are harder to perceive in realtime.

I assume something along these lines exists for video forensics.

something I really enjoy about Eirik's work is that he clearly has an understanding that his circuit construction technique leads to significant signal integrity problems, and then leans into it as a way to create emergent behaviour in his audio synthesis.

trying to write a blog post that captures how I felt about EMF this year is proving to be difficult. there's just so much to say and it's hard to capture the incredibly unique vibe of the place and everyone in it. I can't possibly just talk about the specific things I was doing there, because everything involved a huge supporting cast and so much amazing interrelated work. every time I try to cut the scope creep, it feels selfish. everyone contributed so much energy and time and expertise.
