I see a lot of posts on here chiding people for suggesting as a solution to the surveillance capital tool know as .

I understand their point to a point, however, the solution to windows spying is, ultimately, to not use windows.

We haven't learned from anything. We have never lived in a time where so much information was available to so many people, and yet...

I'm from #Canada - a country who's founding principles of Indigenous #genocide inspired Hitler. Canada was still running this program in the early 2000s, and unlike Germany, we still haven't really admitted what we've done yet, let alone teach it in our schools.

Some of us have learned. Some of us spotted the inconsistencies, recognised the cognitive dissonance, and pulled at the threads of the poorly stitched lies that pass for history under a colonial oppressor.

Never in human history have so many people had access to the total sum of human knowledge, spanning thousands of years, as it has been for the last 20 years. Despite this, we have allowed ourselves to fall for populists, and have delegated our rational thinking to paid pundits.

I'm incredibly depressed about this.

Sheila, a family friend, a neighbour, a mother - stolen from her family as a child during the - a woman who did everything she could to care for her community - our community, was left impoverished and without any help from the same state that destroyed her family.

She was couch surfing, staying with my uncle when his house caught fire in the middle of the night. The others barely made it out. Sheila did not.

Sheila was the first friend to go during the pandemic. There have been 9 more since then. I haven't even been able to begin process Sheila's passing.

I'm greatly looking forward to this permeant public reminder of a friend, but more importantly a role model - a person who despite having very little, gave it all. The same cannot be said about most.

May her death bring positivity, and foster a sense of community over consumption.

The "anti-biden" thing is simply real people's real response to the actions and words Biden himself has said and done.

Regular, real citizens of the earth see and hear him. We make up our own minds. We decide that fascism and racism are not qualities we want in a world leader.

What people want is for the democratic party to run a candidate that is not a corporate stool, nor a fascist, nor racist, etc. They want a real option for progressive change. They want the status quo that has ravaged this planet to end. Biden is a staunch supporter of that status quo, as well as actively bombing and starving captive civilians.

I'm not an American. I'm a "regular" free-thinking citizen of Canada, where we have our own problems with status quo and racism.

You can call me a Russian spy if you want, but that has nothing to do with reality - you know, the one where Biden is pumping cash into a genocide, AND beefing up the police state in order to combat YOUR OWN CHILDREN, and eventually YOU.

We sure as fuck don't want trump's or poilievre's. We want a leader that isn't down with racism, genocide, and selling out the 99% - and Biden is far from that leader.

Ask yourselves why it's Biden running and not Sanders.

Had my first grocery shop during #boycottLoblaws today. Ended up getting some stuff from the next worst grocer, #sobeys.

In the produce section there is a sign showing their "So-Local" branding along with the claim "Grown right here at home".

I would like to point out that EVERY SINGLE ITEM under that sign is IMPORTED from either "USA" or "USA or Mexico".

We live north of the USA, and very north of Mexico.

Not a single local item on the shelf. Not even one from this country. So-Local indeed.

I don't see this mentioned as a symptom associated with , but since it's onset I've been plagued with powerful fits of hiccups that come on instantly and usually only last about a minute.

They seem to be triggered by changing position from sitting to standing. They seem to be more likely if I've had anything to drink while seated.

Any other with this, or just me?

I hooked my GNU/Linux-loving son up with an old #lenovo #thinkcenter mini-PC that I picked up at a used AV store for about $50. For another $20, I upgraded the ram to 12GB.

He's got it setup it up with #debian as his first home server, with which he's now hosting a few static websites and an internet radio station for his friends and family. He's got loads of resources to spare for when he gets into running larger services.

You don't need to spend $30+ a month on cloud services when an old recycled office PC will more than suffice.

The best part? Helping him troubleshoot his problems with #DNS and #nginx and all that fun stuff. I've already made every mistake possible over the decades, and he gets to benefit from that. That how it should work!

Behind search for masto is a resource-hungry application called . Sure you might be able to get Masto to run on a , but you won't be running elastic search with it.

Having recently moved my instance to a much more powerful system, I now run ES, and WOW what a difference being able to search post makes! Soooo many times I wanted to reference a toot that had scrolled by but had no way of finding it. Now I do!

Even though I've put some serious resource limits on ES, it's bar none the most resource intensive service running (out of around 25).

Please consider sending a few bucks to the of your instance. Better yet, if you can afford it, sign up for a monthly donation. They need it.
