are there any other bots like @mobydick where the source material is really really good turns of phrase?

@maya

@thisemailfindsyou has some pretty good turns of phrase, though perhaps not as consistently as Melville

Lessons I have learned from recent mending attempts: neither electrical tape nor sugru have the necessary combination of sturdiness + flexibility that is needed for repairing a cheap belt that has become badly cracked. I think I might be able to salvage the buckle at least though, I bet I could find a sewing project to use it in.

My family has redefined "prank" to mean "a surprise nice gesture you do for someone". So for example: sneaking out early in the morning to buy donuts for the whole family, or doing a household chore that's usually someone else's responsibility, or hiding a package of someone's favorite candy where they will find it unexpectedly. The key is that it is something that you know the prank recipient will be not just surprised but also happy about. I highly recommend this approach, it makes April Fool's Day much more fun imo

emma,
@emma@social.emmajuettner.com avatar

My other favorite kind of pranks are the ones that are just harmless yet baffling, like the time when my mom printed out a bunch of photos of penguins and hid them around the house. Why penguins? I do not know

YouTube just recommended me this spot-on homage to Game Changer made by a group of high schoolers, it is truly excellent

(and if you haven't seen Game Changer... Watch it! It is excellent too!)

Someone asked me for tips on creating a basic website recently and I wanted to share this one here because I have found it extremely helpful: Sadgrl's Layout Builder is a great resource for generating an HTML/CSS layout with a navbar, sidebars, footer, etc. You choose which layout options you want and it gives you the HTML/CSS with many useful comments, which you can then edit to add your own text/images/styles/whatever. I highly recommend it if you, like me, do not really know or care what a flex box is and just want to get on with making a website.

When it comes to un-gendering clothes (yes!), something I don't hear about much but I would LOVE is gender-free shoes. Make the size number based on foot length, and then standardize the widths so we have options there for narrow/wider feet (the barefoot shoe industry is doing a great job with this right now). Then just buy whatever style you want.

@hollie yes!! seconded, as an adult who has to shop in the little boys' section to get shoes in my preferred style that actually fit

These days I’ve seen a bunch of sites that look like personal pages (blog or wiki or digital garden or Zettelkasten…) running software the authors wrote themselves or got from a friend. I think it would be neat to list them all somewhere, with a link to the site, screenshot or two, a link to the software and some comments by the author. Or maybe we could have a webring linking such pages. No screenshot required. We’d call it “The text and the code go hand in hand” (or something shorter) with the tagline: “People with a tool tailored to their specific needs to present themselves and their projects on the web”.

emma,
@emma@social.emmajuettner.com avatar

@alex sounds like a cool idea! I am always interested to see how other people build their sites. For my personal website, I have a fork of makesite.py (a single-file python ssg) that I have modified to suit my own preferences. I like it because it's simple enough that I can tweak it easily. It's very satisfying to have a thought like "hmm, I really don't like writing markdown, I'd much rather write my posts in HTML" and then be able to just... change the tool so it does that. :)

Excited for this year, I have a plan and everything: https://github.com/NaNoGenMo/2023/issues/13

What I am basically trying to do is write a mystery novel where I do not know the solution until I read it, using code that approximately simulates the mechanics of the game Clue/Cluedo to determine what happens, and using Tracery grammars to slot my own writing onto that plot structure. That is my goal anyway, we'll see how it goes in practice! :)

emma,
@emma@social.emmajuettner.com avatar

I am always impressed by the people using more complex computational methods for their entries but I have never gotten tired of just cobbling together weird little projects using mostly Tracery.

It's Halloween and also the first snow of the year here in Chicago, which reminds me of a joke "proof" that one of my college profs did one year when it snowed at our annual Halloween Math/CS Colloquium.

Prove: Halloween = Christmas

Given: Halloween = Oct 31

Christmas = Dec 25

Oct(al representation) 31 = Dec(imal representation) 25

Therefore: Halloween = Christmas

you know how in nutcracker productions the rats wear rat costumes... has anyone done a swan lake where the swans have actual swan costumes. because now I really want to watch that

emma,

@maya that strategy worked well for a girl I knew in high school, she had a very chill pet rat who she would sometimes smuggle into school in her oversized hoodie. occasionally you'd see it just peeking out of one of her sleeves in class

This might be of interest to anyone who likes both Halloween and comics: Revenge of the Hallowzine

It's an anthology of Halloween and horror comics, some silly/sweet and others creepy/scary, all by Chicago area artists.

They have four days left in their Kickstarter campaign and are only about $200 from their goal, so check it out now if you're interested!

I've got loads of socks with holes in them and have been wanting to try darning them. But there's one thing I'm a bit apprehensive about: my feet are very sensitive to uneven textures. For example, toe seams bother me a lot, so I wear most of my socks inside out.

So, I have a question for darners who have sensory sensitivities (or who mend socks for people who do): are there specific darning techniques that produce an especially smooth/flat texture? Probably I will need to do some experimenting anyway to see what works for me and what doesn't, but I'd love to hear tips if you have any.

Was watering my windowsill plants today, looked over at another pot that's nearby, and got jumpscared by this little mushroom, which was definitely not there a couple days ago!

The pot used to contain cilantro, but it died several months ago, so I cleared out the dead plant and left the pot of dirt sitting there until I had a use for it. I'm surprised a mushroom would grow in soil that hasn't been watered for months, but it has been very hot and humid the past few days.

Since I have no idea what kind of mushroom it is and I don't really want more of them popping up, I assume the appropriate course of action is to remove & compost? But open to other advice as this is a new situation for me :)

emma,
@emma@social.emmajuettner.com avatar

@AaronReuland thanks! I'd be more inclined to let it grow if it were outdoors, but my plant pots are all indoors so I'm a bit nervous about ventilation. Dust and pollen tend to irritate my sinuses, so I would guess that mushroom spores might have a similar effect if left unchecked
