$4.25 for a bag of mostly air. Funny.

This is even more ridiculous. Found at Shoppers. That's $6.43 with tax. For a 200 g bag. Before Loblaws bought Shoppers they were pretty competitive on these sorts of things. Loblaws has changed them into 24 hour convenience stores that also sell you oxy if you have a prescription.

@geekingirl It's worth checking other grocery stores to just normalize by seeing if for some reason nobody feels like buying groceries at this particular moment today, and oh… well look at FarmBoy just now… lol

No one has the right to make another human being cry for what their head office is doing.
That fuckin low life is lucky I wasn't there, as an ex-cashier I would have set that useless piece of shit straight. She couldn't say anything but I sure could. 🤬

Have signed the petition to investigate for their absurd price increases on food via Change.org:
https://chng.it/BLDMrDf8FC
Due to consolidation in the Canadian grocery market in the past few decades, too much power is in the hands of a few large corporations and they are putting profit and shareholder dividends ahead of providing the basic needs of customers who have struggled to afford a basic human right: food.
I will also avoid visiting all Loblaws-owned outlets in the month of May.

One additional lingering point in my mind on this topic makes me think of the historic actions taken by rogue governments in which they squeeze and attempt to nefariously control their populations through artificial scarcity and potentially resulting famine. I certainly hope that's not going to be an unconscious outcome of the actions of a corporation like (or , for that matter [with that ominous corporate name rather concerning in itself]).

@grivettcarnac yes it really is about food insecurity. The founders of the movement this May over on Reddit were very sensitive to the needs of people who find it difficult to boycott because of economic situation and lack of local competition that limits choice. They have published a whole range of options including buying only loss leaders, letter writing campaign, petitions and social sharing. I do feel privileged to join in solidarity https://www.reddit.com/r/loblawsisoutofcontrol/comments/1ck0sl6/boycott_updates/

Had my first grocery shop during today. Ended up getting some stuff from the next worst grocer, .

In the produce section there is a sign showing their "So-Local" branding along with the claim "Grown right here at home".

I would like to point out that EVERY SINGLE ITEM under that sign is IMPORTED from either "USA" or "USA or Mexico".

We live north of the USA, and very north of Mexico.

Not a single local item on the shelf. Not even one from this country. So-Local indeed.

Reminder: The Loblaws boycott is underway until May 31st.

Please do not shop at Loblaws or any of its many subsidiaries. Support your local grocery stores where possible, and use non-Loblaws owned chains when local options are not practical or available.

Treat yourself to an ice-cold beer 🍻 or a giant glass of your favourite red wine 🍷 for taking part.

We've had a decent roll going for about a month, so can probably make it through May as well. But we have the luxury of good access to alternatives in our 'hood.

We have that Food Basics at Hampton Park, the very good Produce Depot at Maitland, and a Bulk Barn at Carlingwood. Those can cover pretty much everything we need, and a comfortable biking distance on nice days too.

Today was the first day of #BoycottLoblaws in #Ottawa, so I went to the local Metro (Beechwood Ave), and after wandering the store, was absolutely flummoxed to discover that nearly everything we regularly purchase was less expensive at our local Loblaws (Rideau St).

I didn't see that coming. After thinking about it a bit, I suspect it might have to do with the location of the Metro (Beechwood/Rockliffe is well-to-do).

Will have to look at a map and see where the next closest one is. 🤔

We've been doing it for last year, and maybe some of you will stop shopping there too!

I'd also like to suggest to those that garden to grow a bit extra, not only for neighbours and friends, but for your local food programs.
