1989's Macintosh SE/30L is remembered as one of Apple's biggest flops. MacWorld criticised its rotated L display as "...bringing all of the issues and none of the benefits of a true L display", while MacWeek called it "Some kind of deranged P display nobody asked for".

ChatGPT is a vast library that comes with its own librarian.

Griffey, (edited )
@Griffey@mastodon.social avatar

@davew That's like saying a first aid kit is a doctor. ChatGPT is a librarian in the same way that it's an artist...it isn't capable of thought, it isn't capable of evaluation of new input, and most importantly it doesn't have a moral or ethical center from which to base decisions. It's a fancy word-based pachinko machine.

That is an atrocious take, belittling to librarians and fundamentally misunderstanding both ChatGPT and the work of a librarian.

Signal strongly opposes the newest proposal in Europe.

Let there be no doubt: we will leave the EU market rather than undermine our privacy guarantees.

This proposal--if passed and enforced against us--would require us to make this choice.

It's surveillance wine in safety bottles.

Moving from screen to tmux, this post was very helpful for bootstrapping the experience-tailoring process: https://hamvocke.com/blog/a-guide-to-customizing-your-tmux-conf/

After a quarter century in screen, remapping c-b as the magic prefix key back to c-a, where all my muscle memory wants it, was helpful and pleasant. So are the mouse menus, and the "list the URLs on the screen" function is a nice touch.

A long time ago I was given this advice about coding estimates:

Take the programmer's estimate. Double the number and Increment the time measure.

Thus: 1 hour -> 2 days
3 days -> 6 weeks
4 weeks -> 8 months

How does genocide happen in 2024?

It doesn’t, of course. As Graeme Wood from The Atlantic explains, there are only tens of thousands of legally killed children, that’s all.

(Thanks, Graeme, we were all apparently very confused.)

See, y’all were getting worked up for nothing.

Terrible idea: an author writes a book, but instead of releasing it, they train an LLM on it, and release the model.

So readers can ask the LLM to generate text based on it, but can never know the original text.

glyph,
@glyph@mastodon.social avatar

@foone I seem to remember a performance-art bit in the floppy disk era which was a single-user experience (a hypertext book, IIRC) that deleted itself after viewing, and was never put online. This reminded me of it but I cannot remember what it was called. Fitting, perhaps.

Infosec people: Looking for suggestions on a secure video camera for work.

We're a non-profit barn that wants to set up a camera to monitor the driveway for security of our horses.

NO cloud storage, wifi access, etc. We need the video to be secure due to the nature of our work.

Talk to me about what we need. (I have already looked into the legal stuff, I need equipment recs).

iFixit's had enough with Samsung. That secret contract was only part of the problem.

Anyway, I've been saying Samsung sucks for years. Not sure why it wasn't obvious to anyone who's used one of their crapware-laden devices.

Flask-Mail 0.10 released, after a 10 year hiatus! Thanks to @wlach for picking it up at the #PyConUS sprint. This is part of my Pallets-Eco initiative to get old popular extensions maintained again. It's been unarchived and refreshed. I went through and closed out a lot of the issue backlog. We'll have to figure out what a 1.0 release will look like. https://github.com/pallets-eco/flask-mail/releases/tag/0.10.0 #Python #Flask

@davidism That felt like a good use of time! Thanks again for all the guidance and help (not to mention all the work you did to get this over the line). Great illustration of why events like #pyconus are so valuable to the community.
