I find it outrageous and incredibly offensive how often subtitles are censored.

I've experienced it on broadcast TV. On Amazon. On YouTube. And elsewhere.

Deaf people do not need swear words hidden. Those of us with hearing loss don't suddenly decide, "Ah, yes, because I can't hear fully, I don't want to experience swearing anymore."

Stop censoring our content!

#Subtitles #ClosedCaption #Censorship

linguacaps,

@localzuk Is this in situations where the audio is not bleeped? If so, that's as offensive as H-E-double-hockey-sticks. 😠

What makes you follow people on Mastodon?

#Following #Mastodon #Interests #Introduction #Poll

linguacaps,

@Rasta If someone follows me, I read the first few screens of their most recent posts and ask myself "Do I want this on my feed?" If you're posting, for instance, 15 lovely, smart, insightful messages a day about car repair, I probably won't follow back, because it's a topic that interests me not at all.

I'm in Arizona for #ALTA46: the American Literary Translators Association conference. It's just the first day but I've already met wonderfully smart, creative, thought-provoking, kind people... including these members of our 2nd-place-winning team for Translation Trivia Night. (A so-so photo but a great team!) I can't wait for tomorrow's sessions. 😃

A #2StateSolution is already a huge compromise with reason & with justice for the Palestinians, driven from their land. Since when does the world favour the creation of ethnostates (since Westphalia, I guess!)? In a sane world, one state, democratic & with rights of all protected, home to Jewish & #Palestinian people, would be obvious. When Israel fails to offer a two state solution, generous in bounds as an apology to reason & justice, it shows it's priority - greed for land, not peace
#Gaza

linguacaps,

@Greenseer Israel has repeatedly offered a two-state solution. It even almost happened once. And the party that ultimately refused it was not Israel.

I just blogged my argument for why we shouldn't use the slogan "from the river to the sea" https://micahflee.com/2023/11/why-we-shouldnt-use-the-slogan-from-the-river-to-sea/

linguacaps,

@TheSaanichDaily @msteenhagen @micahflee Saying "Don´t use ethnic-cleansing slogans" isn't "tone policing."

linguacaps,

@TheSaanichDaily @msteenhagen @micahflee You do not strike me as someone who is having this conversation in good faith. This is not about my "own made up version" of anything. It is the meaning that the phrase was created to convey, according to the people who created it.

When you upload a resume to the employment website Monster.com, its AI software tries to turn your work history into an online profile... with nonsensical results. It has, for instance, decided that I am the former dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

In translators' forums today, I've seen bizarre generalizations about our profession: "Translation isn't an art; it's a job" (as if we literary translators did not exist) and "We are not saving lives, so it is important to be realistic about deadlines" (as if we medical translators and other colleagues who do urgent life-saving work did not exist).

We need to work on being more aware and respectful of the breadth, scope, and importance of our profession.

Bill Clinton banned assault weapons in 1994; mass shootings dropped by 43%.

George W. Bush and the GOP let the assault weapons ban expire in 2004; mass shootings increased by 245%.

These numbers tell the whole story.

linguacaps,

@Strandjunker Also, Maine has hardly any gun control laws to speak of. We're told that everyone being armed to the teeth will promote safety, but the reality is completely different, all over the world.

The decreased availability of translation work that pays a dignified living wage is downright depressing. I'm damn good at my job and I love this profession, but I'm not going to translate for starvation wages. There are still some clients willing to pay for quality, but they're fewer and fewer.

In my 50s, I didn't think I would have to ask myself "What do I want to be when I grow up?"

@GossiTheDog Wasn't that the whole point of Musk's buying Twitter? To dismantle one of the most effective tools for fighting the rise of fascism and for opposing the worst abuses of underregulated capitalism. He accomplished exactly what he set out to do.

    linguacaps,

@GossiTheDog 1) There's a difference between claimed intent and likely actual intent. 2) He and his buddies benefit massively from the destruction of Twitter, and that benefit was a predictable outcome from the moment he announced his plan to buy it.

I'm thinking about the new #AI tools that convert your voice into a real-sounding version of you speaking in another language, and how Spotify is using them to make foreign versions of podcasts such as "Armchair Expert."

    Those podcasts have guests.

I wonder how guests are going to feel about being translated that way.

I bet most won't care or will think it is cool, but I can imagine some people objecting.

I wonder how they will handle that.

    #podcasting

    linguacaps,

@coffeenlanguage @grammargirl Did you see the test I posted today where I had an AI app analyze a video of me speaking Spanish and dub it into my native US English?

There are plenty of problems. First, though I selected "American English," I sound like a Spaniard doing a bad impersonation of Trevor Noah.

And the register is way too formal even though I was using colloquial Spanish. Plus, since Spanish takes more syllables to say things, it added things I never said to pad out the wording.

    linguacaps,

@grammargirl Sure. Feel free to quote me or link to my YouTube video.

Spain has asked the European Union to recognize Basque, Catalan, and Galician as official EU languages.

For those of us who translate to or from any of Spain's co-official minority languages, if this proposal is ever approved, it would mean that the EU's excellent multilingual terminology database IATE would start to include terms in those languages.

Machine translation + MTPE might be an efficient approach to translating some kinds of texts (though I'm not entirely convinced), but it's definitely inefficient for others. To help out a longtime client, I'm doing my first MPTE project now and, goodness, I could have translated this so much faster and better on my own! This approach is such a tedious waste of time. Time I'm billing for, but still. Just hiring me to translate it would have saved time and money and aggravation.

Translators do more than just translate words into another language for our clients. Sometimes we're cultural advisors, explaining how they could rewrite their texts slightly to make them more effective and profitable in another country or culture.

I'm starting to think it's time to watch TNG again. It must've been coming up to 15 years since I last saw it. At that particular time I mostly found it irritating, but I've caught myself thinking fondly of it of late, so maybe an episode or 2 wouldn't hurt.

    linguacaps,

@Neverfadingwood The first season is often irritating because they still hadn't figured out how to write for those characters.
