The downside of my parents living in an area full of littering vape addicts is there being litter everywhere.

The upside is I’ve just walked their dog and obtained lots of free lithium ion batteries. Some still in vapes. I wonder if I can do something with the heating elements too…

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@cablespaghetti Don't do that. As a general rule, if you are at all uncertain about something regarding lithium batteries, don't do it.

OK, first time I have seen a best man’s speech created by ChatGPT. Very little promoting done. Crazy. Very convincing. But it’s a best man’s speech so meant to be bullshit, which makes ChatGPT so well suited.

mansr,

@revk For something that nobody wants to write and fewer want to hear, perhaps ChatGPT isn't a bad choice.

@penguin42 Well done. What did you search?

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@penguin42 The Chichester one is real and unsurprising. It's pretty much the centre of the city with a fairly large monument in the middle. The Salisbury one is just some residential streets on the outskirts of the city.

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@penguin42 Curious. I wonder what inspired that naming.

Latest bit of fun, but small, bit of C code...

iMessage (from which the screen shot comes) copes remarkably well with them.

When a specification casually says to remove accents to compare letters just A to Z, FFS. Ended up scanning the whole Unicode XML file to find A-Z type letters.

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@revk This still doesn't take into account that what counts as an accent differs between languages. For example, in Swedish and Finnish, Ä is a distinct letter from A, while in German it is merely a variation with both alphabetised together. Further complicating matters, if dealing with Scandinavian languages, you might do well to treat Ä and Æ as sort-of equivalent, likewise Ö and Ø.

Chemistry is like physics where the particles have personalities - and chemists love talking about the really nasty ones. It makes for fun reading, like Derek Lowe's column "Things I Won't Work With". For example, bromine compounds:

"Most any working chemist will immediately recognize bromine because we don't commonly encounter too many opaque red liquids with a fog of corrosive orange fumes above them in the container. Which is good."

And that's just plain bromine. Then we get compounds like bromine fluorine dioxide.

"You have now prepared the colorless solid bromine fluorine dioxide. What to do with it? Well, what you don't do is let it warm up too far past +10C, because it's almost certainly going to explode. Keep that phrase in mind, it's going to come in handy in this sort of work. Prof. Seppelt, as the first person with a reliable supply of the pure stuff, set forth to react it with a whole list of things and has produced a whole string of weird compounds with brow-furrowing crystal structures. I don't even know what to call these beasts."

I wrote a fairly mundane post on Reddit that led to me getting an AI-prompted message with suicide prevention resources.

I was completely mystified but then I realized it was probably because I included the phrase: "I find it hard to manage" (in a context like "I find it hard to manage the crabgrass in my garden ... ").

This is the future isn't it? AI pestering us with context-free misunderstood nonsense. I guess I should just count myself lucky that the AI didn't institutionalize me.

@danielnazer Meanwhile, ChatGPT told me yesterday that I died in 2017. I can imagine someone in the wrong state of mind not taking that kind of thing too well.
