What does the colour red signify?

geert,
@geert@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@mansr Probably the former, as the latter do no use British Spelling.

Crofton,

@mansr Poll broken, can't pick both!

How would people feel about rich twats having private trains for travelling comfortably across their continent of choice?

geert,
@geert@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@mansr Like Putin's and Kim's trains?

Were Greenpeace always twats, or did they gradually turn into promoters of famine and climate change?

Could it be that people no longer know how to craft good search queries?

geert,
@geert@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@attilakinali @mansr Hence the search engines are starting to use "AI" to interpret queries, breaking the experience for people who know how computers work (too)?

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@geert @attilakinali What baffles me is when people who really should know better write queries as full sentences ("what is ...?") rather than just a few words likely to single out relevant pages.

Amazon is recommending me dog food. I do not have a dog. I do not want a dog. I have never bought anything dog related from them (or anyone else).

When I see a mention of someone sending money with Venmo, I picture a group of gangsters loading bags of cash into the boot of a Waymo self-driving car.

Instead of banning Tiktok, which is difficult to do legally speaking, why don't they simply ban vertical videos instead? Much easier to enforce, and it would get rid of all the clones too.

@mansr Or make rotary dials mandatory on phones again?

I have about £100 of Google store credit. Do they sell anything useful other than phones (the credits will expire before I need a new phone)?

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@penguin42 Like I need more of those. Oh well, maybe something will come up before it expires. If not, I'll just buy something out of spite in the last week.

Did Whatsapp change the shade of blue for the "message read" ticks?

flameeyes,
@flameeyes@mastodon.social avatar

@mansr i think so but haven't checked the repo

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@flameeyes It seems to me they're a bit more blue now, making them more easily distinguishable from the grey ones.

@mansr What did you order? Oil lanterns for a wand closet?

mansr,

@geert A bag of plant soil. I see no connection whatsoever to any of those suggestions.

People keep complaining that it's harder to find things online now than 20 years ago. Do any of them stop to think about how much harder it is to make a search engine now than 20 years ago? Unlikely.

mansr,

@geert @attilakinali And AltaVista was the good one that wiped the floor with Hotbot, Lycos, etc.

The problem is that the volume of both good and bad stuff has increased tremendously, with much of the bad stuff disguising itself as good.

Fundamentally, Google obviously wants people to find what they're looking for. Otherwise they'd have no reason to go there at all.

@mansr Just more looking at the past through rose-colored glasses. I call it "Saturday Night Live Syndrome" - you remember the occasional good sketches and forget all the trash you had to suffer in between.
