@revk @steven @coreyspowell It's all quite simple, really:

☀️ 🌔 🌍 = solar eclipse
☀️ 🌍 🌔 = lunar eclipse
🌍 ☀️ 🌔 = apocalypse

@revk @steven @Ptisan @coreyspowell I just picked the first match for moon. Didn't mean to open up for more pedantry, but you're welcome.

I have a pile of (mostly) PCI cards that I really don't need. There are NICs, storage controllers, graphics cards, sound cards, and a couple of USB adapters. Any takers? In the UK. Shipping elsewhere is probably not sensible.

Feel free to boost.

I'm at UT Austin for a lecture and a nontrivial number of students, of diverse gender and ethnicity, are carrying huge plastic jugs of water? Or sitting with huge jugs of water? What are they afraid of?

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@ZachWeinersmith They're afraid of witches, obviously.

Two election related thoughts came down my timeline today:

  • If abstention benefited the left, voting would be mandatory.
  • Abstaining from voting is like waiting for the perfect piece when playing Tetris.

These two posts appeared (boosted) like this in my timeline, and at first I thought the image belonged to the topmost post. I'm not sure how, but it feels kind of right.

Interchangeable lens cameras: the true story.

See bird out of window.

Go to get camera.

Realise wide angle lens is on it.

Pull out telephoto.

Take telephoto out of its protective bag.

Realise you need a back cap for the wide angle.

Find back cap.

Remove wide angle.

Fit back cap.

Install telephoto.

Check camera is in the mode carefully set up for birds.

Go back to window.

… bird has gone.

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@bloor Just use the back cap from the telephoto lens.

"The industrial design of the HP-35 was unusual not only for Hewlett-Packard, but for the electronics industry in general. Usually, the mechanical and electrical components of a product are determined before the exterior is designed. The HP-35 took the opposite approach."

@akosma I read somewhere that a design requirement for the first portable CD player (Sony D-50) was for it to be no larger than a stack of 4 CD cases. It ended up almost exactly that size.

My wife just got me some really nice chocolates in London.

I know they are really nice as I have tried them.

I also know, as my wife got them for me and she loves me.

I also know as they are individually in labelled cellophane bags and each one is in a separate branded wrap, and the whole lot in a thick branded card bag with rope handles.

Why does nobody sell really nice chocolates in a simple paper bag any more, and 8 a penny?

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@revk Since they were already bought, it would've been a complete waste not to eat them.

No, Kryten, it is not "aye ess see two". The II in ASCII is II, not 2. Indeed, it is before the insane days when people turned two letters in a row such as II in to I².

10-year-old just got to function stuff and I'm having trouble explaining in general why you should care which variable is dependent vs independent? Other than that, in stats, you should know the direction of causality, does this sort of thing matter?

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@ZachWeinersmith The independent variable is something you know, the dependent something you want to know. Causality can go either way or not at all.

I understand sat nav, and I also understand that the time and distance for a route can be different for traversing a road one way or the other, or for traversing a junction one way or the other, and even depend on time of day or location traffic at the time.

But for walking directions that does not apply, and I would expect a walking route A-B to be the inverse of B-A.

So WTF does apple send me one way to get there and another to get back?

mansr,
@mansr@society.oftrolls.com avatar

@revk It's trying to make you walk uphill both ways.
