I find it outrageous and incredibly offensive how often subtitles are censored.
I've experienced it on broadcast TV. On Amazon. On YouTube. And elsewhere.
Deaf people do not need swear words hidden. Those of us with hearing loss don't suddenly decide, "Ah, yes, because I can't hear fully, I don't want to experience swearing anymore."
@localzuk Never noticed this before, but I believe when you say subtitles are being censored. Just adding something about audio: sometimes it's censored too. Once a video from a biologist on YouTube had to jump around not being able to say "moist" (or was it "wet"?). I've seen Hollywood movies removing the voice from a scene to stop at one f-word in the whole movie. Another time the actor dubbed itself so that "you're so full of shit" would become "you're so full of it".
@lffontenelle Oh, sure, I know that. But my point is that in audio that isn't censored, subtitles often are. Happens regularly enough that it annoys a huge number of people.
@localzuk@bynkii It happens with Audio Description for the blind as well. It is infuriating Just because I am blind, does not mean I need to be sheltered from the content I decide to consume.
@localzuk I think the only one where it could make sense is like "fbeeping beep" but I'd much prefer putting the actual words and crossing them out (given actual text formatting support, not one of those unicode hacks).
@localzuk As someone else generally reliant on subtitles, I can usually figure out, contextually, which [bleeping] word has been excised by those [bleeps]
@localzuk You know, there was device from the late 1980s or early 1990s which used the closed captions to mute swearwords (during which it'd show the subtitles with a euphemism).
Ironically prudish captions like you're rightly complaining about would break this prudish settop box...
Not that I see any point in this tech, it comes from the same misguided place...
@alcinnz@localzuk Tech Connections went over that doodad a while back. There was even a followup where some haxxor extracted the word list (can't remember who, and it's not at the top of the comments)
