It appears that one well-established source of news and analysis about Gaza and Palestine (@mondoweiss) has had their Mastodon account suspended.

I haven’t read every word of every post, but I sure don’t remember anything too terrible. Could it be that Mastodon is yielding to a pressure campaign to silence reporting about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza?

@donray @mondoweiss I'm no Masto expert, but from what I can tell, they are self-hosting so their account wouldn't be suspended per se. Other instances might choose to block their account (and it appears mastodon.social did block them for a time), but their account still exists.

All of this is beside the point of your post I know, but I thought it was worth a mention that they are still allowed to speak here; choices are being made about who can listen.

I bought winter tires for the first time (I know I know, I should have gotten them before, but I'm a dumb warm-weather transplant to this frozen place). I think now my tires are worth more than the rest of my 400k-km car, ouch.

I'm grateful to be able to afford winter tires, but man it would sure be nice if I didn't have to be 100% reliant on having a car that can make it across Antarctica to campus. Big downside of living on a farm and working in a city. (Upside: baby goats.)

@sundogplanets Very nice. My Honda is from that same era... Enough computer, but not too much computer - haha. I can imagine the cold weather would be tricky with a diesel!

    Weird bug I’ve never seen with any previous iPhone I’ve owned: my iPhone 15 Pro stopped charging over USB-C. Tried multiple cables, multiple chargers, nothing.

    Powered the iPhone off and back on, and it’s back to normal. But I can’t recall ever seeing an iPhone refuse to charge before. (iOS 17.0.3.)

    @gruber Similar observations in the last few days led me to discover that my iPhone had recently configured itself for something called "optimized battery charging" in which it wouldn't charge above 80%. At least at the time I was trying to charge it.

    After some research and fiddling I was able to turn that off. Possibly your situation is something completely different, but that really stumped me. "Yes, I want you to charge. I plugged you in!"

    MJX Bugs 18 Pro

    My very first flight. Noticed the drift at the beginning of the video. Tried to land using return to home with the intent of re-calibrating geomagnetics. Not sure how or why return to home sent the drone firing off at a sideways angle into the field.

    Still investigating. Thanksfully it didn't turn into my first FAA report. :kerbal:

    I hate how cluttered and spammy Mailchimp has become. I guess Intuit owns it now? So, not surprising I guess.

    I can't stand how so much of the energy that once went into blogging now goes into closed-platform email 'newsletters' (remarkably similar to blog posts) because they come with a lottery-ticket chance of making some money. Argh, it's so awful.

    @tomw @octothorpe I'm on the hunt for a discussion group solution for our local drone community, but not wanting to use Facebook or Google Groups. Listserv/majordomo would be perfect but I'm afraid nobody will have any idea how to use it. Possibly there's some middleground of a paid service somewhere, but it is really daunting how few options there are if you want to avoid the big platforms.

    @Edent I can vouch for the team in Colorado who run FusionAuth. They bootstrapped the company (no VC $$) and it is run by the original founders/developers. Good people, very developer friendly. (I have not used their product, and I see no mention of Masto in their docs, but it appears solid otherwise.) https://fusionauth.io/
