I love it when trees grow on rocks. It shows just how determined and resilient they can be, if we let them.
This oak is part of one of the few remaining areas of temperate rainforest in the UK - look at the tree ferns growing on it.
We need to protect and extend these precious remnants.

This is in portrait format.

It's Midsummer Day and the poppies are out. In this case, it's a massed bank of orange and yellow poppies, with just the one white flower in the middle of the throng.
I always admire the individual who can stand out from the crowd with so little effort.

Have a lovely summer everyone.

If I get up really early in the summertime, turn left out of my house, walk about 50 metres, and then look back, this is what I might see.
Of course, this all depends on it being a sunny morning, with a light mist, but the oak trees and the lane between them are always there...

This is the northern rose window from Notre-Dame de Paris. I was there not that long before the fire. Amazingly, it seems as though all the stained glass in this photo actually survived the conflagration. This window was first made in about 1250, and most of the original glass is still in place.

I met these amazing trees last weekend. They are small-leaved limes, and you don't see many this tall. I reckon these were at least 20m, but they may have been bigger.

From somewhere around 10,000 BC till the Late Neolithic, about 1,000 BC, limes were the dominant species in the ancient wildwood of Southern Britain.

Imagine walking through mile after mile under a high canopy of these majestic trees. I'd have loved that...

I went to the Courtauld Gallery on Saturday, and mysteriously came away with more pictures of the ventilation grilles than of the paintings on exhibition...

About fifty metres from our house there is woodland, and in the woodland there are several stands of coast redwoods, which were planted in the 1930s as a forestry experiment. The growing conditions here really seem to suit them, and today, these exotic introductions are getting quite tall. This picture was taken only last week.

A sunny day in New Mexico. The shutters closed against the heat. The chillies drying on the porch.

It all sounds good to me...

Here's something colourful for a Saturday.

I found this classic, old-school, art materials shop on the Left Bank, in Paris, as I was wandering around the Latin Quarter one day - not far from Shakespeare and Co. It had pastels and pencils by the yard. I do hope it's still there.

This is in portrait format - enlarge to see the whole image.

I was on a cycling trip in Cornwall over the weekend when I came across this lovely building.
It was created by the Society of Friends, in 1710, as a Quaker Meeting House, and is still in use.
The best part of the story is that, following construction, the tiny hamlet clustered around the Meeting House became known as Come-to-Good. Isn't that a lovely name?

There's a picture of the interior in the replies to this post.

As a rule, I always post photos taken by me, but today, for a change, here is one taken of me.
I'm just back from a weekend of tree planting in Cumbria. We have to use tall tree guards up there because of all the deer, but it's hard work wielding a club hammer above shoulder height. The picture really doesn't capture how wet I was either. It was heavy mizzle all day, and getting dark by 3:30.
It's satisfying work though.

This sycamore tree is nearly 340 years old. It lives in the village of Tolpuddle, and is the biggest sycamore tree in Dorset.
Underneath this very tree, in 1833, six agricultural labourers met to discuss the poor wages and conditions imposed by their employers. They were later tried under the Incitement to Mutiny Act, and transported to Australia for seven years.
These were the famous Tolpuddle Martyrs - and this is the Martyrs' Tree.

Jonathan Pie on Sunak's new oil exploration initiative. It's funny, but it's true. [Contains strong language - but if you're not this angry, why aren't you?]

I love a good arcade, tunnel or passageway, and this one is a fine example. I know it's somewhere in Prague, but I can't quite remember where - maybe it doesn't matter. It was a sunny day, as you can see, and I was just wandering around, looking for some shade. I particularly liked the contrast between the white, modern, well cared-for arcade, in the foreground, and the older, tattier, well-worn arcade, behind.

Today is #FensterFreitag, and this is the ceiling of one of the buildings in the astonishing Hospital de Sant Pau, in Barcelona. Built between 1901 and 1930, under the direction of the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, the hospital was still in use until June 2009. It is peak Art Nouveau to the very tips of its fingers.

I visited a cottage last week which had this prospect just across the road from its front door.
This seems to be one hell of a tough, old oak - not only has it lost most of its crown, but it is growing on top of a rock.
You just cannot keep a good tree down.

Not far from the sea, in Dorset, lies the small, sad village of Tyneham. The village was requisitioned by the army in 1943, and its inhabitants have never been allowed to return. Today, it sits in the middle of the Lulworth firing ranges, but can be visited when the ranges are not in use for army training.

I found this neglected display on a windowsill there, and felt it encapsulated something of the spirit of the place.
