A lot of fish died shortly after water change. Something's wrong with my well water. Not sure what I want to do now. But it really sucks the joy out of things.

Beiz,
@Beiz@mastodon.social avatar

@johnefrancis That's not a bad idea. My water is way too soft under normal circumstances. I have about 1 hardness and 5.8 pH. Some kind of filter to fix the values would be a good solution for longterm; but I think it's more acidic than normal currently and my sticks don't go below 6. Will need to send a sample to the uni to figure out what's going on.

Beiz,
@Beiz@mastodon.social avatar

@johnefrancis I used to improve the aquarium water with additives; but as the value is parts per million, it's impossible to get exact, and when i got some more sensitive fish, there was always a few deaths between water changes due to the ppm being off. So i stopped doing it that way.

I'm thinking a proper filter system will provide an overall more stable quality than manual preparation.

This is just of the many tweets that are flooding Twitter these days praising Telegram and discouraging users from using Signal with stupid NSA and FBI conspiracy theories.

Under no scenario you should have Telegram installed on your phone. It's basically the Hulk Hogan of E2EE apps

Beiz, (edited )

@campuscodi Except, Telegram is literally the only modern chat application not built on electron (google chrome) all of which overload my CPU to death.

My Ancistrus sp. Calico finally grew to respectable size. I hope they will breed some day soon :)

I really don't get why they aren't more popular. I think they look fantastic (albeit the photo definitely doesn't do them justice. my iphone camera changes too many colors).

#ancistrus #aquarium

Beiz,
@Beiz@mastodon.social avatar

@po3mah Ancistrus are finnicky. The general approach is to just give them enough caves and if it happens it happens 😅 Can't really plan for breeding them it seems (albeit my brown and albino pairs tend to breed every 2 weeks on average with about 100 fry per litter, but even those pick the weirdest nests whenever I make changes to their tank and to hell with the fancy and expensive caves lol).

Can't be repeated enough, quit whatsapp where you can, use signal. It's great, very secure, opensource, not tied to , non-profit etc.

Capitalism is when your tax dollars pay to bail out the bank that foreclosed on your mortgage

Beiz,
@Beiz@mastodon.social avatar

@Daojoan Capitalism is when you pay tax to cover R&D to public owned solutions but the cash goes to foreign corporations like Microsoft instead.

i think the EU should pass legislation that enforces standards based 2factor auth (like totp/hotp) for banks, health insurance etc. it is absolutely unacceptable that people are forced to buy android/ios smartphones to use critical services

Beiz,
@Beiz@mastodon.social avatar

@mntmn better yet, EU should pass legislation that requires all ID authentication software to be owned by the public, open source, and entirely system agnostic.

it's insane that digital ID is privatized, mandatory, and yet only supported on android and ios - preventing european competition from entering the market.

hell, windows should be banned from use within governments. why the hell is a foreign corporation paid billions of public money annually when we could use taxes to develop our own?

Yeah, that is what happens when you steal content from everyone without giving credit or paying for it. Now, everyone is banning your AI bot from accessing their data. Not to mention, the company overhyped its products and is currently dealing with multiple lawsuits for stealing data for training AI.

Beiz,
@Beiz@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft it's a tought choice for me. on one hand, i hate the openAI company. on the other hand, i hate google. so the fact that openai is killing google search with hallucinations has me overjoyed but at the same time i hate that openai enables these people killing the blogging ecosystem.

You know what makes me happy? Looking up something weird like "why does my carrot have a green ring inside" and finding a forum post from like 2010 with a bunch of gardening enthusiasts discussing it. Forums are great. Searchable, readable, text. Still works 13 years later. Wonderful.

Beiz,
@Beiz@mastodon.social avatar

@hbuchel and then "we" decided to replace forums with discord, facebook groups, reddit, youtube and ai generated spam blogs. great.

actually i suppose reddit was relevant for a while but nearly all answers are about 3+ years or older now. basically, it died long before the blackout.

this is why i believe Mastodon Groups could save the internet. If we all collectively convince everyone to move here somehow. Assuming Groups ever actually gets released (2023 target is clearly not happening).

There's no "port of entry" requirement.
There's no "visa" requirement.
There's no "first country" requirement.
You enter the United States, and you apply for asylum.
Because asylum is legal immigration. Period.

The worst thing about online learning is that everything has become a video. Every code tutorial. Every design tutorial. Nobody actually writes out a guide anymore.

It's just "hey guys welcome to my tutorial" and watching 10 minutes of content that mostly isn't relevant...

Beiz,
@Beiz@mastodon.social avatar

@Daojoan honestly, been moaning about this for almost a decade now. but i understand why, and unfortunately i don't see it changing as it's a lot easier making money with a video than it is with text due to the reach of the medium overall.

gone are the days you got paid a living wage by the word (especially thanks to googles algorithms being entirely unable to discern between genuine content and SEO).

i don't see any solution to this short of killing youtube's money mill incentive and SEO.

Beiz,

@ct_bergstrom google already promote junk over quality through gameable algorithms, further discouraging actual effort, research, and time, invested into producing quality content there is just no incentive. 99% of search results currently for any of my interests or hobbies (ancdotal but...) have ChatGPT generated content as the first 10-30 results.

Intel GPU drivers now collect telemetry data on "which types of websites you visit, which Intel says are dumped into 30 categories and logged without URLs or information that identifies you, including how long and how often you visit certain types of sites". It also snitches details on your computer and "other devices in your environment", as well as "how you use your computer" (no clarification provided).
