"I'm waiting for the night to fall,
I know that it will save us all,
When everything's dark, keeps us from the stark..
Reality"
~Waiting for the Night (Depeche Mode)
This morning at 10 a.m., I captured the quiet blue hour that precedes our late 10:56 a.m. sunrise here in Fairbanks, Alaska. With the winter solstice just two days away, these photos show the deep snow and frost enveloping the trees, a common sight due to our still air as we edge toward the return of longer days.
Promise of Winter - taken earlier this year with the promise of snow. Not much materialized. A winter without snow... I really love the silence of snowfall. ❤️
The sun is back at Noatak, Alaska (Inupiat county north of Kotzebue). Noatak sees nearly two weeks without a sunrise (this year Dec 15-27). Clear skies Saturday show the upper limb of the sun just visible on the southern horizon on this pix taken close to solar noon. At pix time a mild 12F (-11C) and north wind 15 mph. There is snow on the Cuillins. The first this year. Winter is come and the days are short. Feelings of gradual decay are no longer the dominant. Instead the idea of sleep and blankets comes to mind. I’m now indoors in the warm. Much of the winter visuals are to do with cosiness and scenes like this one are kept in the mind’s eye. They enhance the contrast. Warm, cosy soft evenings and nights versus the cold jagged mountains in the great outdoors.
