Another update and possibly a solution for some case where posts were not properly deleted. Seems I jumped the gun on this and the restores haven't been intentional - at least not in this particular case....
I'm planning to self-host a Reddit like instance for myself, but I'm between Lemmy and kbin . Essentially I want to host my own data, and jump into discussions from other communities.
With a limited search results, people praise for #kbin, and bash #lemmy developers about their world and political views, however Lemmy is written with #rust, and Kbin with #php .
I just want to migrate to what people will be using to.
Okey dokey. So, I'm looking at viable #RedditAlternatives to replace what #Reddit was providing for me* & I'm currently at the initial information overload stage.
My current understanding is that Lemmy is associated with tankies & best avoided, but it's also the most developed option presently.
Kbin seems to me to be more of an upcoming star, but still lacks important features & an app.
Well everyone, it's the first week in July, and #Reddit CEO Steve Huffman is still a lying asshat who treats Redditors as voiceless resources to exploit. So, as promised, I'm off Reddit and out of r/zfs for good.
The good news is, Practical ZFS is up and running as a replacement, with more than 100 registrations in its first day online and more continuing to come in. I hope to see you there soon!

I've set up a new home for OpenZFS community news, discussion, and education at https://discourse.practicalzfs.com/ and although it's still new and ugly, it's ready for folks to start kicking the tires.
Thinking through the Reddit crisis, I'd recommend that @ernest and @dessalines contact the creators of the most popular reddit clients and work together to piece a bridge that would take the calls that were made to #reddit and translate them into API calls that would go to #lemmy and #kbin
Having those clients run in the same way against the #fediverse equivalents would reduce friction for end-users and potentially help a lot of moderators who rely on them.
I've discovered today that Reddit for me is like smoking - something for when I don't quite know what to do with myself. So I've just been spending more time on Mastodon with you lovely folks.
I don't think I need to go back to Reddit, but I might need someone to send me memes on occasion.
Not for nothing, but @minnieo is doing some AMAZING digital organizing for the #RedditBlackout and the #RedditMigration and anyone who cares about either, or the Fediverse writ large, should follow and learn from her.
This is a STRIKE. The #RedditStrike must continue until they cannot simply handwave it away with a "this will pass". Reddit wants to go public, for that they need content and they need DAU. Do not give them content, do not give them DAU (Daily Active Users - do not use the site at all!).
Schon bemerkenswert, wie User gegen eine Plattform kämpfen, bei der sie freiwillig sind. Als gäbe es keine Alternativen.
Meine Prophezeiung ist, die User werden auf lange Sicht die Kröten schlucken.
Another update and possibly a solution for some case where posts were not properly deleted. There is a limitation in Powerdelete. Here is a link to a new version and alternatives:
In solidarity with the developers and small companies that have come to expect and rely on access to Reddit’s API, /system76 and /pop-os subreddits have been taken private for the June 12th protest. #RedditBlackout
First they came for /r/pics ... now Reddit are coming for the individual personal subreddits
Quite some years ago I'd realised that amongst the problems with using Reddit as a personal blogging space (my avatar here is a relic of that, if you'd not put the two together) was that I do not in fact have any permanent claim to that space.
Reddit's previous policies of moderator re-assignment bothered me. The policies apparently instituted September 2022 and being rolled out aggressively in recent days ... have not weakened my concerns.
And, checking in now, I find a day-old modmail to /r/dredmorbius, a subreddit which only ever was my own personal posts with comments from a few friends, and about 1,000 subscribers ... has received a notice to reclaim by /u/Modcodeofconduct, screenshot attached here.
I have not abandoned the sub. I had closed it in protest of Reddit's continued failings and war against its volunteer moderators and general community.
Considering the guy is in crisis mode and probably coached all day, it's astonishing what he's saying. He is almost... vile? His story is "Apollo etc. sell our (?) data via subscriptions and should hence pay us for our cost," which is - ok, I guess? Like, Reddit has infrastructure cost for their service and sure, that's what an API cost is for. But that's not the issue.
OC Updated: Reddit is quietly restoring deleted AND overwritten posts and comments (mstdn.games)
