I've contributed a few things, instigated others, and still believe in the positive potential of technology. If the internet is broken, I probably had a hand in it (mea culpa). I still believe we can fix it.

Believer in the good in people, in the power of communal action, in personal responsibility, and in reaching out to the other side to find common grounds.

Today is the day Donald Trump became precedent.

@willoremus oh, he's been precedent for a while. For example, he was the first sitting president to try to overthrow the government while still in office.

On average, US presidents have been convicted of .74 felonies.

Today's conviction of Trump won’t end the legal case, which could quickly be appealed and possibly rise to the level of the US Supreme Court.
It's a historic conviction, no doubt.
But practically speaking, the verdict means only that Trump can't possess a firearm – like all other felons.
A felony conviction won’t keep him from running or serving as president.
A law professor explains a few other key points:

TNLNYC,
@TNLNYC@mastodon.social avatar

@TheConversationUS incorrect. Trump CAN vote, as long as he's not in jail. New York law allows felons not in jail to vote. Florida laws only denies Florida felons (ie. Convicted of a felony in Florida) the right to vote. Otherwise, it defers tongue state where the conviction happened.

TNLNYC,
@TNLNYC@mastodon.social avatar

@TheConversationUS there are, however, some potential economic consequences as SEC rules limit felon rights in publicly traded companies. This may impact the DJT stock.

A felony conviction makes one ineligible to enlist in the Armed Forces. 10 U.S.C. Section504. So what does that mean in terms of being able to serve as Commander in Chief? Will the armed forces need to change that rule if becomes president again?

Am I reading this rule correctly?

My understanding is that a felon cannot be a beneficial owner of a publicly traded company with a higher than 20% share. What does that mean in terms of Trump 's ownership of ?

Of note: The Republican Party has not yet nominated a candidate. They can still decide who their presidential nominee could be in 2024. Whether they decide on choosing a convicted felon or someone else will now be decided in July.

Trump is not guaranteed nomination UNLESS the GOP does not believe in the rule of law.

TNLNYC,
@TNLNYC@mastodon.social avatar

@garbados ... nevertheless this should be the question from journalist in ANY discussion leading up to the GOP convention.

... and if they still nominate him, the question leading up to the election should be why America should vote for a convicted felon.

    @gadgetboy Actually, incorrect. I just got word from a friend who's a lawyer who said that Florida will defer to the other state's law when a conviction is held. Because New York laws allows convicted felons to vote, Trump is likely allowed to vote.
