Am I the only person who used the reddit web site in a desktop browser with a computer? Was everyone using it with a mobile app?

(Actually I did use the official reddit app sometimes and it seemed fine.)

(But also, fuck those guys now!)

@rasterweb I used it on desktop web all the time, mobile web when not. No apps at all.

bocko,

@rasterweb
Nope, I'm the other one.

joe,

@rasterweb Reddit has always been something that I do when I'm bored, so quite often it's on an iPad but even then, it's through Chrome. I don't think that I would want to do it through an app.

@joe @rasterweb But they'll do their best to trick you into installing and using the app...

Crystals,

@grimmy @joe @rasterweb they broke the mobile webapps a while ago

@Crystals @rasterweb @joe this is what I'm referring to, primary button is to open the app and this shows up every time I open a reddit page. I think it's tied to a session cookie or something.

@grimmy @Crystals @joe I've seen that as well, and just hit the "use browser" button. Annoying for sure, but not the worst thing ever.

@rasterweb @Crystals @joe sure but it is a dark ux pattern for sure

@rasterweb Based on the stats of /r/baltimore, ~20% of our traffic comes from old and new reddit combined, ~10% comes from mobile browsers, and the rest is all from mobile apps. This definitely varies based on the subreddit, but I assume it's pretty close to the site-wide stats.

@rasterweb Using old.reddit.com on desktop. Used to use i.reddit.com on phone but they turned that off.

@rasterweb I didn't really get into Reddit to any meaningful degree until I was mostly on mobile for it.

Their official app was so garbage for a long time that BaconReader was the officially recommended best available on Android.

It took me a bit to catch wind of the fact that most moderation is done by bots that are effectively third party apps in their own right and thus effectively all moderation, especially NSFW forums, is going away.

davoloid,

@rasterweb I used Sync on mobile but found it much more amenable on the main site, old style. Easier for following threads that fork off, opening links in new tabs etc but staying in the thread. Depends on the kinds of convo, I guess. Mobile is sometimes better when there's mainly visual content.

setnorth,

@rasterweb Nope, used it on desktop, too. Not exclusively, but I think most of the time.
