Lawmakers expensed millions under new program that doesn’t require receipts - The Washington Post | Everyone grouses when Congress gives itself raises and baroque arrangements like this, ripe for abuse, are what they pass instead. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/06/04/house-representatives-expenses-receipts-lodging/

gooba42,
@gooba42@mastodon.social avatar

@GovTrack Maybe instead of trying to fleece us for more pay on top of their legalized insider trading, bribes, golden coffin retirement plans, they should make an attempt to bring down the cost of living.

They claim more pay will reduce the incentives to bribery but the incentive for the bribe is always "more than what you currently have" and that doesn't ever change no matter how much they currently have.

gooba42,
@gooba42@mastodon.social avatar

@GovTrack That's a trap though. The majority of the country would already be receiving a significant pay raise if they stepped into a job in Congress right now.

Campaigns are expensive, the only fix there is publicly funded elections but lack of congressional pay is still a very hard sell to a country with a median income under 50% of what Congress gets just for having gotten the job regardless of performance.

gooba42,
@gooba42@mastodon.social avatar

@GovTrack That's why they already get paid twice the average.

If they can't make that work, they are going to have to explain a lot better to us why they need to also have legal protection for insider trading and all the other perks they use to become millionaires on $174k annual income.

They can live in a Congressional dormitory.

gooba42,
@gooba42@mastodon.social avatar

@GovTrack They don't have any motivation to care because their lives are uniquely insulated from the factors that run our lives.

It's not like nobody is advocating for a living wage, it's a majority opinion in the country that it's a good idea. Congress is free to oppose the majority opinion because they never directly feel the consequences of their actions.

99.9% of jobs do not require urgency of any kind, really they don't. We've all had a boss who acts like someone will die if we don't hit some made up deadline by people who don't even do the job. No one needs their meal 1 minute faster or the paperwork before tomorrow morning. Your time off actually doesn't need to wait. Sometimes I think about how legitimately bad most businesses are at time management and hiring, and I wonder how they manage to exist at all.

gooba42,
@gooba42@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr And the worst of the worst are somehow the ones who feel most entitled to tell everyone to follow their models.

We have Costco guy quietly going "Hey, just pay everybody and treat them nicely" (individual Managers can and do differ here) and nobody's listening.

On the other side we have every wannabe Jack Welch getting lauded publicly for "Employees are disposable, just use them up until they're empty and turn them out into the streets!" in every media.

gooba42,
@gooba42@mastodon.social avatar

@ianhecht @mentallyalex @RickiTarr The flat out lying to me is the worst part.

I would respond more positively to a voice message that said outright "We're never going to staff up to cover normal call volume. Please wait."

gooba42,
@gooba42@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr I've said, not really joking, that every generation of management commissions a new study by academia to figure out how to improve work productivity and morale. The study always says "Pay and treat people better" and they bury the results, complain about "ivory tower academics" (who worked from their real world data!) and we go another 20 years without fixing anything.

gooba42,
@gooba42@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr We keep asking after better benefits. I work for a major medical insurance and watching paperwork go by for fully covered single claims for amounts well under my deductible is rough sometimes.

Likewise we ask for better communication and management is sure we just want to hear more words so now we have more pointless town halls where the CEO brags about how his international vacation brought his family together so everyone should take one and then bullshits jargon for the VPs.

@jeffjarvis Every possible legal avenue to salvation requires the Democrats to do things they refuse to consider.

We won't expand the courts.
We won't force a recusal.
We won't charge any of the organizers or financial backers of Trump's coup.
We won't take down any of the Right Wing terror orgs currently building up for their 11/5 revolts and voter intimidation.

They've told us flat out when, where and what they intend to do to harass and attack us and we're still going to idle.

I’m not that confident he’ll be convicted. Anybody else would be. But he’s had a lifetime of paying people off or intimidating them to get his way. I can’t imagine all 12 jurors being immune to whatever tactics he and his goons have applied. And then there’s the appeal. We already know he owns much of that process.

What's meaningfully different between rounding up "undesirables" in concentration camps and bombing them versus gassing them?
