tchambers,

#RedditBlackout organizers aren't fooling around and many have shifted into full on scortched earth on Reddit and to #RedditMigration mode:

intrabyte,

@tchambers I don't care to kill Reddit as much as I do to give life to the fediverse.

timmymac,

@tchambers You know, I'm not even THAT mad at Reddit but am still considering deleting my account just because of how nice it's felt to break the doomscrolling the last couple days

latewizard,

@timmymac @tchambers I replaced doom scrolling with doom watching YouTube videos. I refuse to be productive.

madargon,
@madargon@is-a.cat avatar

@latewizard @timmymac @tchambers I am afraid it's incurable problem. I use Mastodon/Fedi as only social media and feel more addicted than ever.
going back to scrolling

@tchambers

As I understand it, the Reddit owners are doing this, in part, to prevent AI LLM's from scraping their site. That seems like a good thing. Or was that just an excuse from the company?

Waterloo2,

@tchambers reddit wants you to go to Twitter and leave reddit

Retrosponge,

@tchambers
I am so down for this. Not visited Reddit since the blackout started.

@tchambers THAT'S how it's done!

jbwharris,

@tchambers I'm honestly so over my favourite places on the web being burned to the ground, then having to deal with watered down alternatives with 1/100th of the community engagement and pretending it's better. I get that people have grievances with Reddit and genuinely hope they do come to some level of compromise with the community. Reddit houses some of my favourite communities and losing them honestly hurts my soul after losing some of my Twitter communities with no viable replacement.

digitaltwilight,

@jbwharris @tchambers I just started on lemmy.ca and hoping that in time it will build into something special like Mastodon...

jbwharris,

@digitaltwilight @tchambers It's so pie in the sky to think we can spin up alternatives. We already know with Mastodon that there is a certain segment of people who won't even bother. Reddit is a 20 year old site and has grown communities over that time. While we'll always be able to create new spaces online, the maturity of a platform is what takes time to grow. It's like planting a tree, it's all well and good to do today, but it's going to be 10 years before you'll get decent shade from it.

digitaltwilight,

@jbwharris @tchambers It may appear to be pie in the sky if we look at it on a half empty glass basis. In the 30 years I have been on the net, lots of 'establishment - world will end if it fails' communities have come and gone (anyone remember Geocities?) that I look on this as a great opportunity to build communities on the net that are distributed and not subject to the greed and whim of one operator.

jbwharris,

@digitaltwilight @tchambers Part of the appeal to Reddit was a microniche community could be found among the thousands of other communities on the site. So it never really needed to stand on its own. I'm not militant on the decentralized aspect of things. While I see its value, I just don't see this as broadly adaptable at this point. As a tech nerd, I don't see my friends, family and co-workers picking this up anytime soon, whereas Reddit did have that adoption at some level.

jbwharris,

@digitaltwilight @tchambers I kinda feel like the Fediverse is like Linux. While clearly a viable and usable platform for many people, it's always going to be a bit too much for normies who just want to go to the Apple Store, Walmart or Best Buy to pickup new hardware. And we have a 30 year roadmap for Linux to know it's not going to all the sudden "break through" today, tomorrow or next year.

tchambers,

@jbwharris @digitaltwilight

Or it could be like Linux in that it grows to power a ton of places without folks even noticing --like Linux is behind Android phones, Chromebooks, Set Top boxes, and forks into many different interoperable flavors that go lots of other places. We'll see.

jbwharris,

@tchambers @digitaltwilight That's an ideal, but feels a long way away. Though it's obviously the difference between new-ish stuff and a very mature ecosystem like Linux.

digitaltwilight,

@tchambers @jbwharris Again, all under the hood stuff that people need to be made aware of instead of the constant spew about how hard it is to install (easier than Windows for sure!) or use (Mate, Cinnamon and KDE shoot that one down!).

digitaltwilight,

@jbwharris @tchambers Ha! Linux, my pet subject. The biggest issue I have seen in Linux (early adopter at Slack 1
) has been that a lot of the dev work has been done by people who really don't want mass adoption! This has lead to a lot of issues over the years that have not helped make it the OS of choice for average users. Add to that all the BS MSoft has spewed over the years about Linux and sure it has stayed niche (more)

jbwharris,

@digitaltwilight @tchambers I think that is inherently the issue with Mastodon too. There are many in the community who don't want it to become a 1-for-1 replacement of big social, they actively want to nerf growth out of self interest. And I get that. If I could have bottled Twitter from 2008-2012, add in Quote Retweets I'd be happy. But obviously communities evolve and change.

digitaltwilight,

@jbwharris @tchambers I think we give ppl too much credit for caring what platform they are on. Ppl would use campbell soup tins and string if their neighbours were using this method. Until of course campbells decides to charge them by the tin.

@tchambers Hey did you know that on the ads, you can report them? Part of the razing efforts should be to mass report ads for threatening content, misinformation, etc.

thetacola,

@tchambers i love how it’s using sca2 to obfuscate content

bbtw,

@tchambers
like ive always said,
if reddit never existed all the cool and helpful content would get posted on dedicated forum and all the worst users would just invent reddit.

@tchambers Are they kidding with that poster?? I haven’t seen such a clear-cut, fully-justified case of TL;DR since the movie 2001.

@PamW @tchambers From the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey” directed by Stanley Kubrick. An obscure little art film that was made by boomers a long time ago.

nicolai2k,

@tchambers In the section about generating random text, is there a reason you're supposed to "remove the 'ki|či' line"?

kkarhan,

Pretty shure once #Anonymous is looking for some #lulz op, they'll do an #OpReddit and go full Napalm + Agent Orange on it whilst hammering traffic bills via #LOIC...

mitka,

@tchambers I did this to my first Reddit account. Wiped every post. Happy to do it again now that they have shown their true colors
