As a cultural #anthropologist, I appreciate your approach to seeing the #Fediverse as having diverse cultures. I really appreciate the even-handed tone and thoughtfulness your bring to these discussions. I am someone who came to Mastodon to get FAR, FAR, FAR away from #BigTech. I do not regret the move. I’m a newbie who is not (yet) wedded to any particular #fediculture. I find everything happening here fascinating.

I wouldn’t mind a trend to more female-identifying fedizens. 😜

Just saw video on a Telegram channel of #Rostov residents cheering #Prigozhin as his motorcade pulls away. He stops to stick his head out, wave, and shake a few hands. Eerily similar to #Trump #Coup #Russia.

Answering my question about the fate of #Russia defense ministry leadership :

According to Russian media, major changes to the leadership of the Russian Ministry of Defense including changes to the current Defense Minister, Sergei Shoigu and Army Chief of General Staff, Valery Gerasimov have reportedly been agreed upon in order to stop the march of the Wagner PMC group towards the capital of Moscow; these negotiations have also reportedly included the assured “security of the Wagner Group.”

#Prigozhin reportedly said he was turning back, but I see no reports that he said he was giving up his command base in #Rostov. Things shifted in a big way today. Power in the Slavic Mafia got just a bit realigned. #Russia

New: It is reported that the Wagnerians broke through the barricades on their way to #Moscow.

The governor of the Lipetsk region confirmed that the columns of Wagner PMCs are already in the region

Around 15:00 Moscow time, it became known that the militants had passed Yelets. It is 340 km from Moscow. The rebels can enter the capital by 19:00 Moscow time.

The thug oligarchs Potanin, Manturov, Rotenberg and presumably the younger Kovalchuk could have flown out of Russia amid the mutiny.

Dictator Putin plans to eliminate Prigozhin and promise amnesty to Wagner militants.

The leadership of the Russian Federation is discussing the possibility of recognizing "Wagner" as an extremist and terrorist organization.

Russian Telegram channels are spreading video of the alleged Wagner PMC disarming the first Akhmat fighters.

#Yes, this is exactly the most appropriate way to think about #Russia. The #Wagner #Coup doesn’t make sense until you shift your interpretive lens to see the whole situation as a #mafia showdown.
