Well everyone, it's the first week in July, and CEO Steve Huffman is still a lying asshat who treats Redditors as voiceless resources to exploit. So, as promised, I'm off Reddit and out of r/zfs for good.

The good news is, Practical ZFS is up and running as a replacement, with more than 100 registrations in its first day online and more continuing to come in. I hope to see you there soon!

Magnifico,

@jimsalter So, what the heck is ZFS? And why do open source projects seem to have such an aversion to saying in plain language what their project is and why you might want to use it? I'm sorry if it's very famous, but still.

@Magnifico OpenZFS is an extremely advanced filesystem which offers, among other things:

  • Built-in multiple drive and volume support
  • Support for arrays larger than "every hard drive on the planet put together*
  • Per-block cryptographic data validation hashes
  • Automatic repair of corrupt data using said hashes
  • Inline compression, multiple algorithms supported
  • Native encryption
  • INSANELY fast replication
  • Instantaneous atomic snapshots

And more. These are $1M SAN features, in FOSS.

@jimsalter It's worth knowing, if you haven't yet heard, that Discourse's developers are funding development of a plugin adding ActivityPub federation to Discourse. In my opinion it's not yet usable (e.g. it currently restricts post editing because federating edits isn't implemented yet), but it's under active development.

@mcdanlj that is pretty exciting! I'd love to be part of the fediverse eventually. I looked VERY hard at Lemmy/kbin/etc, but reluctantly came to the conclusion that they weren't quite ready yet.

@jimsalter You probably don't need it, but... After a few years of administering Discourse, I wrote up what I wished I had known when I was just getting started. In case anything in it is useful to you: https://meta.discourse.org/t/mkjs-opinionated-discourse-deployment-configuration/193355?u=mcdanlj

@mcdanlj thank you!

@jimsalter I was wondering what you would eventually settle on. I think you've made a good choice with Discourse.

Lemmy/Kbin just aren't there yet.

@kazaii @jimsalter Well, also, Lemmy/Kbin are just different with different goals. No particular reason a "link aggregator" should be the best place for nuanced conversation. ☺

I've found Discourse to be a great way to support nuanced conversation and think this was an excellent choice.

@mcdanlj @jimsalter

No doubt

I was more-so commenting that his community is a phoenix rising from the ashes of Reddit. It would be tempting for his community members to want Lemmy/Kbin -- they're probably also looking for other exiled subreddits.

Jim went with the stable and maintainable option. Sysadmin/10 .

I am on Lemmy and I am in a chat with the admin of my instance. It's slow goings. Also, the migrated communities of r/toronto , r/networking , etc. just aren't there yet.
