@jon #Leipzig has a program where people can sponsor bike loops in their neighbourhood for 330 Euro per loop. They are typically installed on residential roads (replacing public parking lots). We pooled some money in our building and sponsored 8 of them.

Somehow my mind is having a ridiculously hard time making sense of the fact that the PS3 is nearly 20 years old. 💀
NES? Sure!
Sega Saturn? No problem!
I can easily and gladly place them in their own time zone.
But 20 years for the PS3. Yeah, this one kinda breaks me. 😱

@OutofPrintArchive As someone who still owns 3x PS3*, I can relate 🙈
(*two in use with a EU/US PSN account, one new in reserve). PS3 has been a gamechanger 20y ago and it's still a great system.

This is why we can't have nice things. I suppose the eventual goal of PayPal was probably ALWAYS to use all the data collected from their customers to "delight consumers with compelling offers" (who writes this shit? This is seriously the way these corporations think, and they have whole rooms and teams of people coming up with this garbage) https://newsroom.paypal-corp.com/2024-05-28-PayPal-Announces-New-Leaders-to-Build-New-Advertising-Platform-and-Accelerate-Consumer-Product-Innovation

@jake4480 What a bullshit bingo. Surprised they didn't mention AI-driven customer insights "to fuel their innovation pipeline" 🙄

chris,
@chris@mstdn.games avatar

@jake4480 Same, I use it mostly for ebay. I certainly don't use Paypal to discover more of what I love and I absolutely don't want to be delighted with compelling, highly personalized offers 🤔

An interesting one for #MusicWomenWednesday - sometimes as I'm watching TV, I use Shazam to take note of a song so I can find it later.

Isobel Waller-Bridge is a modern classical composer for TV and movies, and her cool song "Bloom" was in whatever I was watching. That led me to her whole 2015 EP, 'Music for Strings'.

I'm not a fan of your older regular classical type stuff. But THIS? THIS is damn good.

It may sound silly, but this actually annoys me a little bit...

I have F2A for my stuff at work, and whenever I'm asked to introduce the code generated by my phone, I get this screen. What's wrong with it? That it specifically talks about Google Authenticator, immediately setting a preference towards one specific app (from Google, no less). I use Aegis Authenticator (free, open source, https://getaegis.app/), at it works perfectly.

Why the need to veer you towards Google apps by default?

chris,
@chris@mstdn.games avatar

@hk +1 for Aegis and I agree, there are better options than Google Authenticator, it shouldn't be considered as some sort of default.

Kona bikes close. Stages power meters close. Rapha laying off US staff. All in one week.

The high end of recreational #cycling has become increasingly unsustainable. Prices are too high for consumers, and companies locked into a system where they cannot reduce costs. A house of cards

chris,
@chris@mstdn.games avatar

@ronanmcd Worrying and sad news. Kona's touring range used to be comparatively affordable but with prices hikes from 1299€ in 2014 to 2499€ in 2023 for a Kona Sutra - that's hard to justify. High prices for proprietary parts and groups are another trend that worries me, repairs have become very expensive.

chris,
@chris@mstdn.games avatar

@ronanmcd Yeah, same with some racks and screws with obscure diameters or integrated bike lights. But there is nothing worse than this e-bike with proprietary parts and build-in battery that needs an app and a connection to a server - what could possibly go wrong.. (they since went bankrupt but apparently McLaren / Lavoie bought them 🤔 https://blog.pragmaticengineer.com/the-pulse-vanmoof/

:vaultboy: Holy moly, a 14GB NextGen Update 9 years after release! Happy to see so much love for the Fallout series 🙏

If you are a new Vault Dweller coming from the tv show - Fallout 4 is chronologically the last game in the series but has the most accessible and modern gameplay. The games don't have to be played in order and can be played on their own, I'd start with :vaultboy:

HTML is in and used for so many things, that's my wife's theory about the meaning of life. We all just become HTML when we die

chris,
@chris@mstdn.games avatar

@jake4480 Nice coincidence - just yesterday I've taught my son his very first lesson in HTML and said something similiar when he was a bit reluctant why he would ever need this. Somehow they've skipped HTML in school 🤯 so we wrote a very basic "hello world" and then compared to the Guardian's news - which has some surprisingly clean HTML, easy to follow along.

Found this neat greeting 😄

🚴‍♂️ Looking for recommendations for a conversion: rims + tyres. The factory rims on the Cube NuRoad Pro FE 2022 are ...not that great. Requirements are:
tyres: 35-40mm for 70% asphalt, cobblestone, 30% gravel, forest tracks, tubeless, easy rolling, good puncture protection
rims: affordable, sturdy, doesn't have to be ultra-light

I'm thinking DT Swiss G540 with Schwalbe G One Allround? Any cons or other recommendations?

@jake4480 This is the first Taylor Swift album I listened to in it's entirety. 31 songs. My wife and our teenager are slightly irritated because I won't shut up about it 😄 I enjoyed the album, there are some excellent songs. 16 bonus tracks is crazy, I'm sure Swifties are very happy today. The effort that went into the release and the various editions with 'handwritten' lyrics letters and all those goodies is a masterclass 👏

    I remember using a Flightstick Pro for the family Mac Performa in the mid 1990s. My dad had the Chuck Yeager flight simulator (which was pretty cool at the time), and that was the game he had gotten the stick for.

    But I mostly used it for REBEL ASSAULT. 😍

    A screengrab from Star Wars Rebel Assault for the Mac - showing the cockpit of your X-Wing, and you're targeting a TIE Fighter

    chris,
    @chris@mstdn.games avatar

    @jake4480 Rebel Assault will forever be the reason why people bought their first CD-ROM drive 😂 I saved up and bought a way too expensive NEC triple speed. CD-ROM transfer speeds then basically doubled every year and the drop in prices was insane.

    chris,
    @chris@mstdn.games avatar

    @jake4480 the early 90s gifted us with some of the best and most influential PC games, it's mindblowing what suddenly became possible on a family PC: Wolfenstein, Doom, all LucasArts games, Kyrandia, Myst, System Shock, Wing Commander, Heretic, Command & Conquer, Duke Nukem, Civilization, Quake, Tomb Raider, Diablo... PC gaming really became mainstream (and more affordable) around mid-90s for the first time.
