Read about the General Motors Streetcar Conspiracy

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_streetcar_conspiracy

Automotive and oil companies have no problem conspiring to destroy public transportation for their own gain. They have a lot of influence in government even now.

My hometown has a population of less than 500 people. 100 years ago the population was around 1.500 people, they had passenger and cargo rail service. Car companies bought the rail company in the 1930s and shut down the line. The tracks were removed but the bridges and railway bed is still there.

A political leader should take public transit, send their kids to public school, use the same healthcare as the rest of us. At the very least they should have done so regularly before taking office. We don't need to be ruled by aristocrats. You aren't qualified to run the city if you use your money to opt out of living in it.

@sanae
I 100% agree.

A few years back, I was in Memphis visiting family. I always try to use the bus system when I am there (my family think I am nuts, but whatever). Busses break down, the air conditioning falters, and often capacity is standing room only. The transit system obviously needs more budget.

Then, I'm watching the news, and the fucking governor says that Uber and Lyft are providing transit very well and could substitute for a transit system. !!!????

When was the last time you saw an Uber or Lyft vehicle with a wheelchair ramp and/or lift? If that motherfucker rode the bus, he'd realize that the transit system accommodates EVERYONE at a low cost. Unless and until Uber and Lyft rides cost $2 and require all vehicles to accommodate wheelchairs, that Tennessee governor can just fuck right off.

And by the way, I just returned from Las Vegas, where I took multiple bus trips where 2-3 wheelchair riders were on the bus at the same time. Wheelchair riders are not outliers; they are common and part of the community.

Going over the Manhattan Bridge to Brooklyn earlier this evening on the Q train. The light was so beautiful. I don't often post video here, I think it takes up so much space on the server etc but what if an asteroid lands on NYC tonight wouldn't it be a shame that nobody got to see this?

Looking down the row of seats on the Q train. Orange seats and a lot of chrome. Sunlight is flashing and reflecting off of every surface. The car is fairly empty, and the two closest people are preoccupied. We can see the Manhattan bridge flashing by outside the windows.

I hate that we in the 🇵🇭 have inherited a car-centric mentality due to nearly 50 years as a colony of the United States. Having experienced the excellent public transportation of cities like Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Berlin, London, Milan, Amsterdam, and Madrid, I can only feel sadness because the transportation system in Manila is way behind our peer metropolises in Southeast Asia.

Walk if you can. Take the bus if you can. I know that's not possible for many, but please try to avoid giving the auto companies any more money. A few locations have small islands designed for people more so than cars. Montreal is one such location but still suffers from all of the same issues. We need to go back to this way of thinking!

When Cities Treated Cars as Dangerous Intruders

To many urban Americans in the 1920s, the car and its driver were tyrants that deprived others of their freedom.

by Peter Norton

"Today it is a commonplace that the automobile represents freedom. But to many Americans in the 1920s, the car and its driver were tyrants that deprived others of their freedom. Before other auto promoters, Charles Hayes saw that industry leaders had to reshape the traffic safety debate. As president of the Chicago Motor Club, Hayes warned his friends that bad publicity over traffic casualties could soon lead to 'legislation that will hedge the operation of automobiles with almost unbearable restrictions.' The solution was to persuade city people that 'the streets are made for vehicles to run upon.'"
