I hate that we in the #Philippines 🇵🇭 have inherited a car-centric mentality due to nearly 50 years as a colony of the United States. Having experienced the excellent public transportation of cities like Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Berlin, London, Milan, Amsterdam, and Madrid, I can only feel sadness because the transportation system in Manila is way behind our peer metropolises in Southeast Asia.
City bus drivers, mechanics and utility workers, who provide service to several Eastside communities and downtown Los Angeles, have voted overwhelmingly to #strike, their #union announced Wednesday.
From today's local newspaper via Bay Area Newsgroup...
"The brand-new vehicles (buses), which could arrive as soon as the end of 2024, have water as their only tailpipe emissions....
There's just one problem: Most of the #hydrogen that is currently available is produced from #fossilfuels, and that causes more of the #greenhousegas emissions that hydrogen buses are supposed to reduce."
The very fun and not-at-all-chilling thing conveniently buried in the basement of the article is that the only way "speed governing" mechanisms in cars can work is by tracking everywhere they go. Do you think that data floats away into sweet nothingness after it's collected? NO. No it does not.
"Also known as speed limiters or “Intelligent Speed Assistance,” some speed governors can use GPS technology or cameras to cap vehicle speeds based on where the car is driving."
#PublicTransit advocates in #Indiana are urged to contact their state legislators to oppose SB 52, which would prohibit turning existing car lanes into bus-only lanes.
@RM_Transit I'm curious if you have any thoughts about the #MetroTransit Southwest line debacle in the Minneapolis-Saint Paulq metro area light rail system. Do you have any insights into how #Minnesota planners screwed up?
Driving 8 hours round trip today to pick up one person, and I'll never understand why Americans think this is more convenient than my colleague taking a train.
#PublicTransit advocates in #Florida are encouraged to complete an interactive survey for the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority Community Bus 🚎 Plan, which aims to transform #PublicTransportation in the county over the next 10 years.
To many urban Americans in the 1920s, the car and its driver were tyrants that deprived others of their freedom.
by Peter Norton
"Today it is a commonplace that the automobile represents freedom. But to many Americans in the 1920s, the car and its driver were tyrants that deprived others of their freedom. Before other auto promoters, Charles Hayes saw that industry leaders had to reshape the traffic safety debate. As president of the Chicago Motor Club, Hayes warned his friends that bad publicity over traffic casualties could soon lead to 'legislation that will hedge the operation of automobiles with almost unbearable restrictions.' The solution was to persuade city people that 'the streets are made for vehicles to run upon.'"
