PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: NEVER, I repeat, NEVER write your next 200,000 words novel in Google Docs. Otherwise you might get rugpulled.

https://www.wired.com/story/what-happens-when-a-romance-author-gets-locked-out-of-google-docs

It's not just Google, of course. When you trust your data to ANY service, you can get rugpulled at any moment without warning. Remember, they have the de-facto control over the data, and you don't.

I think it's very telling the gov't added a way for TikTok/ to weasel out of the ban if they decide to sell. Yeah, as if!

But OK. Assuming their "plan" works and is sold. Now what?

Would they turn TikTok into a -respecting , fixing all the issues they like to complain about? Or would it just remain the same shitty app with the only difference being your data is collected by a different country?

I have a feeling it would be the latter …

Looks like the tool will soon have that awkward "Upload to " option dropped. Good riddance! I never understood features like this one, especially when it goes to a service.

Fun in the morning....
My two plugs just went out - server rack and desktop.
I don't have a clue why they failed, let alone both at the same time.
The only thing that comes to mind is that there was a firmware upgrade....
fun for sure 😂

Every shitty #proprietary service, going head first into monetising your data and using it to train #AI:

"We have updated our terms of service!

We have changed how we describe our service and how it can be personalised for you.

We also updated what data we collect and how we use it.

We have updated our dispute resolution process and your rights to arbitration."

Oh, look at that: #Bluesky was a gold #sponsor of the Open Core Summit 2023:
https://web.archive.org/web/20231127121443/https://opencoresummit.com/sponsors/

This makes me distrust Bluesky even more. For those who don't know: "Open Core" is basically for those who think even "Open Source" is way too radical. They bullshit you by claiming to be all about "openness" and "inclusivity" to distract you from the fact they want to sell you #proprietary software.

🤮

Damn, I wonder why companies love #proprietary software so much. Totally not to screw over the users over and over. 🤡

This case is special tho. They go mask-off right on the start. 😶 That's unusual.

I just learned of the biggest #bullshit feature I heard of: "view once" images in #WhatsApp. The idea is that if you send an image and select the "view once" option, the receiver may only "view it once". After that, it's deleted. And they claim it "prevents screenshots". How? I have no idea.

It doesn't matter because the whole concept is bullshit, of course.

This is the kind of bullshit that ONLY #proprietary software could come up with. The concept relies on all users accepting their golden WhatsApp jail and not thinking outside the box.

This also includes locking up the conversations in a proprietary platform that cannot be properly archived.

It's a very terrible, no good, very bad decision for software projects who claim to be advocating for more

In 10 days (if this threat becomes real) will start my experiment into replacing my design tools by Free / open-source alternatives. I will probably give some insight on that process over here, if some of you are interested.

hot take: academics should be expected not only to publish the full source of the programs that demonstrate their research (I can't believe this still needs to said), but they should also be expected to offer of the environments so that the results may be reproduced at a later point in time. "it works on my machine" is no longer a legitimate problem and "I'm self-conscious about the code because its messy" both holds you to a lower standard than undergraduate CS students are held to for their assignments, while holding the reader responsible for reconstructing your research from some small set of source snippets, which amounts to imposing trust in the authority of university discourse, a kind of metaphysics.

taking a few weeks to learn how to use for should not be too much to ask, knowledge production is mere discourse production when the results cannot be scrutinized beyond a peer review process without a good deal of effort, which we all know that few people have the time for. if you can't be bothered to get it working, then why should your readers be expected to assume that it works?
