It's not just Google, of course. When you trust your data to ANY #cloud service, you can get rugpulled at any moment without warning. Remember, they have the de-facto control over the data, and you don't.
I think it's very telling the #US gov't added a way for TikTok/#ByteDance to weasel out of the ban if they decide to sell. Yeah, as if!
But OK. Assuming their "plan" works and #TikTok is sold. Now what?
Would they turn TikTok into a #privacy-respecting #FreeSoftware, fixing all the issues they like to complain about? Or would it just remain the same shitty #proprietary app with the only difference being your data is collected by a different country?
Looks like the #XFCE#screenshot tool will soon have that awkward "Upload to #Imgur" option dropped. Good riddance! I never understood features like this one, especially when it goes to a #proprietary service.
Fun in the morning....
My two #shelly plugs just went out - server rack and desktop.
I don't have a clue why they failed, let alone both at the same time.
The only thing that comes to mind is that there was a firmware upgrade.... #sysadmin fun for sure 😂
@jhx Gotta love absolutely #proprietary middlemen with #wifi capabilities and their own "embedded web server" directly inbetween critical #infra and the infras lifeblood :) (・・ )
I am still struggling to #debug some #proprietary#audio#plugin (s) using a #flatpak DAW. Is there any way I can see what resources the plugins are trying to access from within the Flatpak #sandbox? Running #bitwig with flatpak run -v com.bitwig.BitwigStudio does not reveal anything and flatpak run --command=sh --devel com.bitwig.BitwigStudio > gdb /app/bin/bitwig-studio (after installing org.freedesktop.Sdk.Debug) only says: (No debugging symbols found in /app/bin/bitwig-studio)
This makes me distrust Bluesky even more. For those who don't know: "Open Core" is basically for those who think even "Open Source" is way too radical. They bullshit you by claiming to be all about "openness" and "inclusivity" to distract you from the fact they want to sell you #proprietary software.
This article just gave the perfect argument to never trust or use #Bluesky ever:
> While the AT Protocol is being opened up soon, the Bluesky company plans to make money via a variety of ways, including charging users for additional features in its app.
I just learned of the biggest #bullshit feature I heard of: "view once" images in #WhatsApp. The idea is that if you send an image and select the "view once" option, the receiver may only "view it once". After that, it's deleted. And they claim it "prevents screenshots". How? I have no idea.
It doesn't matter because the whole concept is bullshit, of course.
This is the kind of bullshit that ONLY #proprietary software could come up with. The concept relies on all users accepting their golden WhatsApp jail and not thinking outside the box.
windows just deprecated windows mixed reality. thousands of headsets are going to become bricked. open source drivers (monado) do not fully support WMR. they are still selling WMR headsets like the Reverb G2. there is no refund policy. the only way to use WMR is to never upgrade your windows install. fuck microsoft.
🚨 #Microsoft#Outlook wants to snatch your e-mail login data (user name AND password) as part of a shady "synchronize" feature. The user has to confirm this, but it is hidden behind confusing technobabble.
And people wonder why I hate #proprietary software. 🤮
Adobe seems to have figured out that I use unlicensed (cracked) software and never paid a cent to them. In 10 days (if this threat becomes real) will start my experiment into replacing my design tools by Free / open-source alternatives. I will probably give some insight on that process over here, if some of you are interested.
I mainly use Photoshop, Lightroom, Indesign and Illustrator, so they are the ones I'm looking to replace... Curious to experiment with #webtoprint, #gimp, #inkscape, #scribus, #affinity, etc.
It's sad when you buy a piece of #hardware (also) because of its #repairability, only to find out later that the manufacturer is super hard to reach and apparently doesn't offer #spare parts. 🫤️ Happened to me with the NS900 Live #headphones from Nocs, where in my case the #earpads disintegrated and the cable on the #proprietary connector broke. 🤔️ But who knows, maybe this will have a happy ending after all as I have contacted them again to ask for spare parts. #positivethinking
Where I speak some advantages Signal has over the bigger richer rest of tech:
“We don’t have to be full of shit. We’re not a surveillance company. I’m not trying to pretend Facebook is good. I don’t have to toe a party line that is divorced from reality”
hot take: #cs academics should be expected not only to publish the full source of the programs that demonstrate their research (I can't believe this still needs to said), but they should also be expected to offer #ReproducibleBuilds of the environments so that the results may be reproduced at a later point in time. "it works on my machine" is no longer a legitimate problem and "I'm self-conscious about the code because its messy" both holds you to a lower standard than undergraduate CS students are held to for their assignments, while holding the reader responsible for reconstructing your research from some small set of source snippets, which amounts to imposing trust in the authority of university discourse, a kind of metaphysics.
taking a few weeks to learn how to use #guix for #ReproducibleResearch should not be too much to ask, knowledge production is mere discourse production when the results cannot be scrutinized beyond a peer review process without a good deal of effort, which we all know that few people have the time for. if you can't be bothered to get it working, then why should your readers be expected to assume that it works?
