Other than DarkTable and RawTherapee, which open-source apps use folks to edit RAW photos? Mainly for minor tweaking and enhancing...the two listed programs here are a bit overload for what I want to do. Shotwell seems to be able to work on RAW photos as well. #photography

This is the same for me with games. I like paying for a game that I like. What I don't like is paying for something and having DRM killing it slowly.
The only software that I bought at the moment is a Windows license since I run Windows 11 on my PC (Dual boot with Debian)

As long as I can use said game/application it is all well.

What I hate is paying for something that will be pulled at some point.

Having a backup for music is a good thing - no worries about the grey area 😉
I also use yt-dlp to download some stuff from youtube to watch later or to archive.
I do not have a streaming service at the moment. (I mostly consume YouTube videos)
Oh yeah, that would indeed add a lot of stuff to the storage for sure 😀

Rant:

I love retro games, especially SNES/NES/N64 and GB games.
Modern games, except for some titles, do not fascinate me at all anymore.
This lead to being able to run machines that are in the "older" realm. Not having a dedicated graphics card can be a blessing for sure. Energy costs drastically go down and one can run quiet systems.
Besides, playing retro games is not taxing at all to the system - any system will do fine.
I miss the great stories older games told... nostalgia hits again.

@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

What is your favorite retro game?

jhx,
@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

@peterkotrcka
Sure is retro by now 😉

jhx,
@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

@gregsie
Currently running a Dell Optiplex 7060 micro - overkill for those old games 🙂
Well, it is my daily driver after all.
Using Mednafen and Mupen for the most part.

jhx,
@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

@gregsie
In general:
Debian 12
OptiPlex 7060
Mednafen (NES/SNES/GB) and Mupen64 (N64)
Also: Using a USB SNES/NES controller (Don't like playing with the keyboard - pretty cheap these controllers on Amazon or eBay for example)

@stefano
Ah those good ol' games 😎

@sourcerer
Really good selection 😎

@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

@sourcerer
We might even go as far as to call everything before 2005 as retro imho.

Some favorites of mine:

  • Link to the Past (SNES)
  • Illusion of Gaia (SNES)
  • Terranigma (SNES)
  • Zelda I & II (NES)
  • Pokemon Stadium (N64)
  • Ocarina of Time (N64)
  • Super Mario (SNES)
  • Wario Land (GB)

...and many more 😎

ChaoticAUR is quite nice. Helps when needing to install binary packages the quick way.
Not everything from the is prebuilt of course - but the most used stuff is there. 😎

Thinking about modding the #OptiPlex a little.
Got a small fan here which I could mount and also have a open case to make swapping out SSD's easier.
Those small systems sure are fun to play with. 😎

Little upgrade on the SFF as a desktop:

Amazing experience! 😎
The system uses roughly around 20 - 30 Watts under normal desktop usage - peaking at 60 when the load is high.
Not going back to the anytime soon... just don't need the power.
Besides: It is quiet and cool - like that a lot.

Running with on it and also have two vm's that I run most of the time.
Also: There is a spare NVMe in there... room for more fun 😎

We were recently made aware of multiple potential DNS leaks on Android. They stem from bugs in Android itself, and only affect certain apps. We have reported them to Google, and are working on fixes.
