In other news, this week I've found a 16,600+ LOC file in the "main" monolith which performs the bulk of business logic for the main web (interconnected to other monoliths and -from what I've been told- even way huger PL/SQL scripts with tens of thousands LOC). And this is just one file, of thousands.The file has no comments, is not documented anywhere, the variable names are far from informative, and there's at least one function with way more 1000 LOC. Now go and debug this. XD

@array
Oh boy... that is debugging fun redefined

jhx,
@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

@array
That for sure is quite some amount of work... love the fact that there are also no comments
Adds a lot to the pain factor

jhx,
@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

@array
That caters to the lazyness of people... shortening everything so it is less keystrokes... and it sucks.
Yeah, can feel you there.
Had to work and go over some PowerShell and Batch files at work... the variable naming was totally insane.

@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

@array
I also very much prefer longer names especially when dealing with many lines of code. Readability should come first... in a perfect world πŸ˜‚

Rant:

Had a 27" 2k IPS panel... then a 32" 4k ultrawide followed....

Now I'm back on a 24" FHD panel.

Why?

I do not need much more. The resolution is totally fine for me.
I rather work with workspaces in #Xfce now than having 100 windows open on one.

Little side effect.
Before my monitor (Both) used about 40W.... now down to 10W
It is truly amazing how much energy one can conserve with making, to me, small changes.

On that note:
A great forum for all things #Linux in general, and specific distros, is the good old LinuxQuestions Forum:

Let's see how that will go.
I've got a USB Fan here that I will somehow mod onto the #OptiPlex I'm using to further cool it down (Not that it get's too hot - just because I can)
Might also be a good time to change the thermal paste.
Also, I will mount a bigger NVMe drive and give the little thing a good cleaning.
Mini form factors are for sure fun to work with 😎

@danct12
Thanks for the hint.
I use a Noctua case fan with a USB adapter πŸ˜‰

jhx,
@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

@danct12
For sure πŸ˜‰

jhx,
@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

@sourcerer
That is one good thermal paste for sure πŸ˜‰

jhx,
@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

@sourcerer
Hopefully you got the new CPU by now πŸ˜‰

Yeah, compiling, which heats up the CPU, makes it required to change the thermal paste from time to tim.

wow, that is a low temp πŸ™‚
I've got Artic MX here πŸ™‚

Small rant:

I use three monitors at work and now use two at home... which in itself is great.
But there is something that nags me.
When dealing with a multi monitor setup I tend to switch my focus too often between monitors. I ask myself if that is the way to go.
Thinking about rather using one and handling all the windows in different #Xfce workspaces - since switching is easy via keyboard.
Maybe this is just me... but I kinda feel a little disorganized - if that makes sense.

jhx,
@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

@jcamos
That is so much me.... πŸ˜‚

jhx,

@thestrangelet
Yeah, it really distracts me currently. Simply too much head movement.

jhx,

@stefano @jcamos
Same for me. I really feel the constant movment... it is not quite pleasent.

A very nice launcher (and much more) is rofi.
I use it with to quickly run a application. It is easy to use and the defaults are sane.
Bin it to a keyboard shortcut of your liking and it will be your best buddy soon 😎

jhx,

@puppygirlhornypost
Also, the default config, which I use, is out of the box very usable.

Sure, WhiskerMenu can be leveraged for that. Did use it for launching before.
I just personally prefer Rofi - but that is subjective.

jhx,
@jhx@fosstodon.org avatar

@freezr
Sure, works as well. Rofi for me though is faster.
