I'm Asahi 95, the 95 in my name refers to #Windows 95 :windows:, cause I love the retro aesthetics of old Windows :ms_heart_eyes:
I'm a person who is a tech enthusiast :ms_computer: and loves #Linux and #FOSS, although I still use some #proprietary#software from time to time :linux: :opensource:
I'm currently learning how to do #webdev stuff such as #HTML, #CSS, and maybe even #Javascript so i could maybe become a web dev in the future!
I joined the #Fediverse :fediverse: mainly because I wanted to get away from centralised services 🔒 and also want to interact with an open and diverse community that respects one another :blobcathug:
I'm a person who is #bisexual and is an avid supporter of the #lgbtqa+ :philly_pride:
I hope I can interact with everybody on the Fediverse and beyond! :blobcat:
just saw a youtube tutorial refer to sublime text as a free editor 🙄
it is not free nor is it open source. #SublimeText is fully #proprietary paid software that allows you to evaluate it. costs $99 to purchase access to releases for three years, then you have to do it again. it's also aging super hard. i wouldn't recommend it to new developers. #vscode / #vscodium has so many more features and is actually free.
I just learned of the biggest #bullshit feature I heard of: "view once" images in #WhatsApp. The idea is that if you send an image and select the "view once" option, the receiver may only "view it once". After that, it's deleted. And they claim it "prevents screenshots". How? I have no idea.
It doesn't matter because the whole concept is bullshit, of course.
This is the kind of bullshit that ONLY #proprietary software could come up with. The concept relies on all users accepting their golden WhatsApp jail and not thinking outside the box.
Are there software licenses out there that guarantee to the user the ability to receive updates and improvements to a piece of open source software?
I don't know of any license other than the GPL that provides this guarantee to the user.
I know that I'm more motivated to learn a new tool when it is protected by the GPL because of this guarantee that future versions will also be open source.
When I license my own software, I choose the Affero GPLv3 because it provides this extra guarantee to the users, even if the software serving the user is on a webserver.
Adobe seems to have figured out that I use unlicensed (cracked) software and never paid a cent to them. In 10 days (if this threat becomes real) will start my experiment into replacing my design tools by Free / open-source alternatives. I will probably give some insight on that process over here, if some of you are interested.
I mainly use Photoshop, Lightroom, Indesign and Illustrator, so they are the ones I'm looking to replace... Curious to experiment with #webtoprint, #gimp, #inkscape, #scribus, #affinity, etc.
I am still struggling to #debug some #proprietary#audio#plugin (s) using a #flatpak DAW. Is there any way I can see what resources the plugins are trying to access from within the Flatpak #sandbox? Running #bitwig with flatpak run -v com.bitwig.BitwigStudio does not reveal anything and flatpak run --command=sh --devel com.bitwig.BitwigStudio > gdb /app/bin/bitwig-studio (after installing org.freedesktop.Sdk.Debug) only says: (No debugging symbols found in /app/bin/bitwig-studio)
Fun in the morning....
My two #shelly plugs just went out - server rack and desktop.
I don't have a clue why they failed, let alone both at the same time.
The only thing that comes to mind is that there was a firmware upgrade.... #sysadmin fun for sure 😂
@jhx Gotta love absolutely #proprietary middlemen with #wifi capabilities and their own "embedded web server" directly inbetween critical #infra and the infras lifeblood :) (・・ )
Many people have been talking about deleting their #Reddit account and posts because they hate what the Reddit CEO does.
While I welcome a major #RedditExodus (I never posted on Reddit because it's #proprietary), I urge people to #backup their high-quality posts (those that have helped a large number of people) before they delete their account for good.
And then repost your high-quality stuff somewhere else for archival purposes.
I consider it to be a victory for the #fediverse as a whole, that in less than a year of the mess with #Twitter, one big player (#Meta) is developing a #socialMedia app based on #activityPub protocol.
I don't see any danger in the existence of #openSource and #proprietary platforms in the fediverse, only diversity that will make decentralized web a unavoidable standard in the near future.
It's not just Google, of course. When you trust your data to ANY #cloud service, you can get rugpulled at any moment without warning. Remember, they have the de-facto control over the data, and you don't.
Asset sellers, serious question: how do #opensource#games use your work without "redistribution" of raw assets? Do you require all contributors or source builders to own a copy themselves? Are they incompatible? Do they have to be converted into a #proprietary format to prevent extraction?
PS: I support this move. It will help establish ROR as the #standard ID for institutional affiliation. RINGGOLD IDs are #proprietary and ROR IDs are in the #PublicDomain under #CC0.
This article just gave the perfect argument to never trust or use #Bluesky ever:
> While the AT Protocol is being opened up soon, the Bluesky company plans to make money via a variety of ways, including charging users for additional features in its app.
IMHO the TRUE difference between free software and open source software is not what it means, but how it's framed.
For free software, we argue based on principle; we think #proprietary software is an injustice we want to end. It's about #freedom.
For open source, often only supposed "practical advantages" are used as arguments, in a desperate appeal to please capitalists. In "open source" circles, proprietary software is sometimes explicitly accepted. Which sucks!
I'm going team red. I'm sick and tired of these recent #GNOME crashes. The culprit? #NVIDIA, who else. I finally found that the driver was putting crash logs in the console. Their #proprietary garbage can go on other people's PC, but I'm getting rid of their garbage. GPU's finally seem affordable enough again (I don't need anything fancy, as long as it is on par with my current 1050ti). Goodbye team puke, hi team red. Now to actually find a card, I've never used an #AMD card... Pretty excited!
This makes me distrust Bluesky even more. For those who don't know: "Open Core" is basically for those who think even "Open Source" is way too radical. They bullshit you by claiming to be all about "openness" and "inclusivity" to distract you from the fact they want to sell you #proprietary software.
Looks like the #XFCE#screenshot tool will soon have that awkward "Upload to #Imgur" option dropped. Good riddance! I never understood features like this one, especially when it goes to a #proprietary service.
I think it's very telling the #US gov't added a way for TikTok/#ByteDance to weasel out of the ban if they decide to sell. Yeah, as if!
But OK. Assuming their "plan" works and #TikTok is sold. Now what?
Would they turn TikTok into a #privacy-respecting #FreeSoftware, fixing all the issues they like to complain about? Or would it just remain the same shitty #proprietary app with the only difference being your data is collected by a different country?
