In Crisis, She Went to an #Illinois Facility. Two Years Later, She Still Isn’t Able to Leave.

The state of Illinois is asking for the end of court oversight of its system of care for people with developmental #disabilities. But some advocates say it’s too soon.

#Workers who are #neurodivergent or have other #disabilities are already prone to facing barriers, but Ms. Campbell’s experience highlights another barrier that emerges when the language used in #JobAds inadvertently weeds out #PeopleWithDisabilities.

This likely contributes to the persistent #underrepresentation of people with disabilities in #Canada’s work force.

would any of you be willing to offer suggestions for instances?

maybe instances where people with physical #disabilities and #autism gather? in a #safe environment, with very tight rules against bullying and extremism?

Don't prejudge able-looking people using parking spots for disabled. Especially if they have a disabled sticker. There are many invisible disabilities that cause pain, mobility issues, balance problems, bad lungs and other issues that make walking across a parking lot difficult.
I'm posting this for a family member who is not on Mastodon. She is 32 with an invisible disability. She has #scleraderma -- a degenerative #chronic condition. A lot of pain, on a lot of meds making her immunocompromised and other issues. Her mother also has disabilities. Neither has a wheelchair but they do have mobility issues.
She wrote "Please do not immediately assume due to age and not looking disabled on the outside that they are not truly disabled and faking it, and start yelling, screaming, swearing and degrading them. There are many disabilities which are not visible such as chronic pain, chronic fatigue, MS, arthritis, Scleroderma, lung disease, etc. Just because you cannot see the disability of a person does not mean it is not there. I have been treated like this many times, and it hurts a lot and is insulting and embarrassing. The pain of our #disabilities is enough to deal with day to day, we do not need to be treated horribly on top of it. Before acting, please find out what is going on with that person you assume is not #disabled. We are more than willing to explain, but not be treated horrible right away without asking us."

Concerning:

Census Bureau wants to shake up how people with disabilities are counted in the most comprehensive survey of America life.

The Census Bureau wants to change how it asks people about disabilities, & some advocates are complaining that they weren't consulted enough on what amounts to a major overhaul in how disabilities would be defined by the fed govt.

Disability advocates say the change would artificially reduce their numbers by almost 1/2. #Disabilities

I want to talk about #accessibility in #gaming for a minute. I consider myself a gamer. I love finding #games I can play, and they're a great way to fill time stuck in bed or waiting at doctor appointments, but because of my multiple #disabilities, I'm more limited than some on what I can play. I've been mostly sticking to text-based games or games where sound isn't critical, but I want to try some #audiogames, and after I explain why I haven't, I'm hoping other #blind people can give me some suggestions.
Some of you might know that I'm both totally blind and #autistic. Because of my #autism, I can get easily overstimulated if a game has a lot of sound coming at me all at once. My sense of direction and where I am in space is also not very good, so I might get lost in games with complex maps. I don't mind that as long as there's no timer or anything like that. I also can't keep a mental map in my head. If a sound is supposed to be coming from a certain direction, there are a lot of times that I can't tell where that sound is coming from, even with headphones on, so I might misinterpret that cue. Finally, high-pitched sounds also worsen my chronic #headaches.
There are quite a few text-based games and others where sound isn't critical, but I know there are several great audiogames out there, too, and I'm just wondering which ones might be playable for me. As long as there aren't a bunch of sounds coming at me at once, too many high-pitched sounds, or a lot of directional sound cues, I think I could play it. Does anyone know of any games I might be missing out on?

"When Lilly Miller was in elementary school, teachers told her parents they needed to immediately sign up their youngest daughter, who has Down syndrome, for a wait list so the state would pay for a day program when she grew up. The teachers predicted a six-year wait.

The Millers have been waiting 10 years. Lilly is now 21 and has aged out of special education programs in the public schools in their hometown of Wichita, Kansas."

Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (#GAAD). Today, I want you to ask yourself, then act, before you speak. Do you have an app you're maintaining? Look at some #accessibility resources for the framework you use for the user interface. Do you know if it's accessible or not? If it's not accessible, are you doing anything about it? Do you tell disabled visitors to your app/site that it's not accessible, and give them a timeframe, if any, when it will be? Do you have a website? If so, do you know if it's accessible or not? Are you an artist of any kind? Is your media accessible? Are you a writer? If so, are the images in your book described with #AltText?

If you're a part of a company that has anything to do with accessibility, including proudly posting about it, do you have any disabled employees? If so, do you show them that they're appreciated? If not, why don't you have any? If you create art about people with disabilities, do you have disabled people take a look at it before you share it? If you write books that have images in them, have any disabled people checked to make sure the Alt-text makes sense, and that the book is accessible otherwise? If not, why not? And when you get disabled people to check out apps, books, sites for your professional needs, do you pay them for it?

Please do remember us on every other day of the year, but particularly today, please remember: nothing about us without us.
