It takes me exactly 8 minutes to ride from our home to one of my fave spots by nearby #ColquitzRiver. I have a few fave spots around this local nature park. It connects with several other local #Saanich parks.
#PeopleWithDisabilities are integral parts of our world & community, yet they often face #inaccessible or #unwelcoming spaces online. The word #disability itself is a limiting term, as it refers to an immense spectrum of experiences. #Disabilities can affect a person’s auditory, cognitive, neurological, linguistic, visual, emotional or physical abilities moving through the world, both online & offline.
This is the first of a four-series post. In this post: 5 actions to #teach your kids about disability inclusion & awesome #PictureBooks to get started. Learn what to look for in #KidsBooks fostering #equity for #KidsWithDisabilities – and how to spot #ableist tropes.
Stolen and reposted because "no alt text" which is especially relevant when you're trying to get a message across to everyone with your posts. Inclusion isn't a buzzword my dude.
@VeroniqueB99 I don't understand why it wasn't for you. I'm a disabled person, disability advocate & accessibility consultant, with several blind & visually impaired family & friends. There's help options for #PeopleWithDisabilities to get more #AltText assistance. Putting it in comments doesn't help visually impaired or blind folks, it's ableist.
I ask people to try to imagine themselves blind, trying to navigate social media multimedia when there's no AltText provided & being ostracized by it
Great fun, #paddling & drumming in our first races! We did pretty good, considering we've had only 7 practices. We beat a more experienced team that has trained twice/week for a few years in our last race with time of 1:08 minutes!
I'm exhausted & bit sore. Putting ice packs on & then having a long hot bath 🛀
Although I've healed a lot from past relationship, there's still some leftover stuff that I'm trying to work through. I know one of the reasons I actively avoid accepting dates is due to feeling like I'm going to burden someone because I'm disabled & have progressive illnesses. I don't want to be a burden on anyone. I don't believe I'm a burden on family/friends in my life. Devaluation of who I am by ex is why I'm still working through the post-abusive damage.
I believe several #PeopleWithDisabilities can probably relate to my thoughts & feelings on this. #Dating is difficult in general. It's much more difficult when you have lifelong #disability & live in an #ableist society.
Tori Lacey, 26, chronicled the troubling incident on her #TikTok & #Instagram pages, where she usually posts content about her #travel exploits as a person who uses a #wheelchair.
Far from meeting the expectations of #disability organizations – along with any of the scenarios presented by the PBO – the #GovernmentOfCanada has instead created a #CDB with a maximum annual support level of $2,400/person.
And despite widespread warnings about accessing the CDB through #DTC eligibility alone, the #Trudeau government has retained this #tax measure as the only way to qualify for the benefit.
Curtis's humiliation came from the fact that at his graduation, the ramp to get onto the stage was too steep & #inaccessible for #WheelchairUsers.
Curtis has #EhlersDanlos syndrome, a connective tissue disorder that causes joint dislocations & severe pain, which is why he uses a #wheelchair & has a service animal.
Devices such as #MobiMats allow people to move across the sand to the water on a sturdy platform, which would make it easier for people like Lumsdon to cross the beach.
...in #Toronto, the city says only three of its 10 supervised #swimming#beaches — Woodbine, Ward's Island & Centre Island — have #accessibility features like mats, decks or beach #wheelchairs that people can reserve ahead of their visit.
Heading out to our last #ParaDragonboating team practice of the month! Our first race is next Sunday, May 26th. I'll post more info about that, after this weekend.
I will be moving into #outrigger#paddling training sessions, after May 26th Gorge Fairway Super Sprints dragon boat season opener races.
I'll need to coordinate my outrigger training dates with my #ParaSailing training, which starts in June. I'm training with Able Sail, to obtain recertification for my #WhiteSails. Able Sail runs their #sailing programs for #PeopleWithDisabilities out of Oak Bay marina. I'm looking forward to sailing those waters. Only sailed Esquimalt & Metchosin areas prior.
1st dragonboat races, happening on May 26. I have to be on location all day, as when I'm not paddling in race, will be doing drum/beat calling for races I don't paddle in. I'm also doing several other volunteer duties on our first race day so would love to create a big #music playlist for the whole day!
Please drop some high energy songs to this open for #musicRecommendations for active water sports thread!
Advocates in #Quebec say Twibanire's experience highlights a years-long problem for people in #wheelchairs when they try to access #mammograms.
A Quebec advocacy group, The Regroupement des activistes pour l'inclusion au Québec #RAPLIQ , recently contacted 94 clinics across the province that offer mammograms. The result, they said, was that 43 per cent advised they couldn't accommodate people who use wheelchairs.
2 photos taken today, by one of my regular #LittleFreeLibrary guests. From a friendly senior lady, who I met 3 years ago, when I first set up my LFL. She's been telling folks about it since the first time we met & visits my LFL at least once a week. I gift her flowers & random fun goodies for her 4 grandchildren, when I have extras available to share. I've made friends with a few of my regular LFL guests 🥰
