"A 2.5 million-acre swath of southern Oregon has been named the largest Dark Sky Sanctuary in the world.
The region, which on Monday was officially named the Oregon Outback International Dark Sky Sanctuary, comprises the southeastern half of Lake County, including Hart Mountain, Lake Abert and Summer Lake."
The night sky above Death Valley’s desert floor is so dark it was given the highest “gold tier” designation from the esteemed DarkSky International, a tier reserved for the darkest locations across the globe. To share its starry views, the park hosts an annual Death Valley Dark Sky Festival. This year, the free celebration runs from March 1 to March 3.
Oh! Speaking of updates here at the ranch, it just kind of happened that we're now hosting a very casual viewing of the Perseides meteor shower next weekend. We're located in an International Dark Sky Community, so we have strangers coming to camp and friends coming to enjoy the shower. Anyone in the American Southwest is welcome to contact me for details if you're interested in joining us. It isn't necessarily an "event" we're opening to the public, but I'd definitely be open to considering hosting new friends for something so casual.
As summer closes, it feels like the season is ramping up again, and it's quite exciting to re-enter the season where work can really be done on our land and we'll be consistently hosting our community again.
