This year the continent of is hosting the General Assembly that takes place every 3 years, for the first time in the IAU's history. It seems only right that an African astronomer should attend this historic event, and needs more African astronomers. If you feel the same, please consider contributing to the IAU African Astronomer Travel Fund:

Oooh. Discovered this morning that the #TokyoCameraClub has migrated to mastodon. A visual feast. Also includes some #astrophotography, like this shot of the #MilkyWay by @keishirooooon

I fully subscribe to this opinion that our language about how we describe astrophysical processes needs a revision, but not only in journals. Let's rethink our #astronomy #scicomm: no more canabalism, please! Nothing is being eaten or destroyed: gravity is the universe's urge to merge, and galactic mergers result in new stars being created. Something greater comes into being.

The COP has been sold out to a special interest, the one that wants to keep business as usual. This has completely undermined the Paris Convention, has rendered the COP an ineffectual body, and is seriously compromising the UN's image in the eyes of the world, and thus also its authority on the international stage. In short, "Is the UN a useful and relevant body?" is becoming a real question.

ICYMI, this was the #Astronomy Picture of the Day for #Christmas . The photo was taken in the part of #Italy I live in. That church in the photo is quite visible from the Observatory where I work.

Now this is the kind of good news we can use more of. Let's hope other countries follow Chile's example.

FYI, we are still ontrack for repeating the same errors in #space that we've made for the oceans. Better tracking of junk is already necessary, but will not be enough to avoid turning low-earth orbit into an inoperable environment. Unregulated space is not economically viable.
