An observation. Based on a sample size of my whānau, Bridgerton is like TV crack for the entire female species. #mysteriesoftheuniverse

Here’s my Skywatch column in today’s Otago Daily Times. A bit of a lament I’m afraid

So Connie Springer was at kennels today for social time. Her school report said she played with some other springers. Jesus wept, she’s filthy…. #springer #springerspaniels

OK. Ian secret admission. In 2004 I left my then dream job (at Hubble Telescope) because Bush was in power. I returned to UK to educate my kids in a sane country. We all left UK by 2022 to live in NZ. What on Earth have the USA and UK become?

iangriffin,
@iangriffin@mastodon.nz avatar

@ZippyGonzales Well I left Uk in 2013 but kids all were in NZ by 2022

So. Moments when you know you are getting old. In a meeting today, someone asked a question about something if it happened, never happening again, and I replied "just like the James Bond film, never say never again". Everyone in the room other than me didn't get the reference. #old #seanconnery

So yes, I know the satellite trails can be processed out of the comet image I shared earlier. Here's a fully processed version showing Comet Pons Brooks on the evening of 4th May. The comet was very low in the sky from New Zealand at the time the images from which this composite has been assembled.

That moment you realise you aren’t British any more. I literally don’t recognise any of the “celebrities” in Bake Off! #imakiwinow

Just for fun. I added together all of the images I took of Comet Pons Brooks a few weeks ago. The session was just after astronomical twilight and every single frame I took (68) had at least one satellite trail. To really piss me off, a whole train of freshly launched Starlink satellites joined the "party". This, friends, is the price we pay for "progress".

@root42 nah.. if CO2 aided internet connectivity in remote areas for rich americans they would say..."more co2"

@mrblissett Yes but at least wind turbines have some local approval process.

@M0CUV @Dtl median combing the images (after aligning them so the comet is in the same place gets rid of most of the streaks. But comets at their brightest tend to be close(ish) to the sun and are impacted by these trails a lot!

iangriffin,
@iangriffin@mastodon.nz avatar

@pl Actually yes. Because you don't need space based systems to get global internet.

Shows how out of touch I am. One of my internet pals told me today they managed to snag one of these at their local chemist. literally a rat test for Flu, Covid and RSV... all in one. The world is amazing that we can do this!

Things you probably don't know about me. #1 I love antarctic science and stories. So much that I have pretty much every book written about the heroic age. I also have this. It's a picture drawn by Dr. Edward Wilson, who accompanied Scott on both his polar expeditions. This is a picture drawn by Wilson as a gift to his sister on her birthday in around 1880. I love it! #antarctica #captainscott
