Le Forum mondial de l'eau #commence aujourd'hui et se tient jusqu'au 25 mai à #bali À cette occasion, nous partons au Panama, et plus précisément au bord de son canal. Cet axe majeur du commerce maritime mondial subit depuis l’année dernière une baisse de ses ressources en eau à cause de la sécheresse qui frappe le pays.
Just got off the Falkirk Wheel and it's a great experience on an incredible bit of engineering. We were taken up, piloted along the aqueduct, turned around, and came back the same way. Smooth ride, barely even notice you're being lifted or lowered.
Heading back towards #Greenock through #Glasgow and we've got a sea day tomorrow before we reach the Shetlands.
Arts and Crafts style Lock keepers' houses at Bowling on the Forth and Clyde Canal. Designed by Burnet, Son and Campbell, and built in 1896, they are the only Arts and Crafts style lock keepers cottages on the canal.
The entrance to the Forth and Clyde Canal at Bowling. Designed by James Smeaton, this was the world's first sea-to-sea canal designed to shorten navigation times. Work began on it in 1768, but it wasn't finished until 1790. To mark its opening, a barrel of water was carried from the Firth of Forth and was emptied into the Firth of Clyde.
At day's end, I tied up the boat near a Canal & River Trust service shack: water, elsan, toilets and shower.

I hurried from the boat to the CRT building in only my shorts, T-shirt and shoes, towel and soap in hand. (These places lack clothes hooks, so fewer items is better.) They did have a wooden bench, and a disabled grab handle that I used as a towel rack.
The locks toward Haigh Hall are deep. Their massive gates weigh more than a tonne each. A number of the gates have chains and pulleys to help boaters open and close them.
To share the work, I asked another boat to pair up.
Quite a few of the #locks are covered in a lush, living carpet of #vegetation (see photo).

On commence par deux paysages au passage de la frontière entre Arnéguy et Orreaga-Roncesvalles (oui : Ronceveaux et son col sont en Espagne), n'en déplaise aux nostalgiques de l'expression anachronique "de France et de Navarre" (un check géographique et historique s'impose).
On finira cette montée dans la hêtraie et son brouillard.
Le #canal de #Bardenas est la clé de l'#agriculture (conventionnelle / intensive) dans la comarque de Cinco Villas, province de Saragosse. Il achemine l'#eau des #Pyrénées depuis le grand #barrage de #Yesa sur la rivière Aragon jusqu'à Ejea puis Tauste, au nord -est de Zaragoza et se déverse dans une multitude d'autres canaux plus petits.
L'acequia de Sora est un immense #canal, prolongeant celui des #Bardenas, et régulé par une série d'ouvrages : bassins de mise en pression, écluses, portes, afin d'amener l'#eau là où l'#agriculture la nécessite.
Ces ouvrages datent de 1960 à 1980 pour la plupart.
Petit retour sur le système des #canaux : à certains endroits il faut faire se croiser un #canal et une #rivière, alors hop, un petit #aqueduc et cette différence de niveau de 15m passe comme une lettre à la poste.

Going through a flight of double locks, traditionally boats would be tied together to move more easily between locks.
You don't see it often because newer boaters don't know how, and —oh no— they'd have to talk about something other than the weather. It takes experience, trust and collaboration.
In the photo, one boat is crewed. It is steering both, using only one engine. The other boat crew is operating locks.

Living on a boat with a refillable water tank, I've learned to conserve water.
I wash daily but only shower once a week, because:
It's a waste to run lots of water over your body and then pump it overboard.
Human skin is great at keeping clean and oil-free without any help from Proctor & Gamble IF you let it recover from the chemical abuse of "body wash" etc.

One of those phone memories surfaced reminding us that a mere six years ago today we were in Damme in Belgium. This is the Damme Canal, built on the orders of Napoleon in order to move troops to the Netherlands without harassment from the British. It's a popular photo spot thanks to its straight line and rows of poplar trees along its length.
