…È un po’ tardi, però… Sembrava che avrei memato oggi (ieri, era ieri, oggi è un po’ tardi) per “ahaha 4 giugno, Internet Maintenance Day”… peccato che si sia rivelato realtà, oops… 🤭

Ovviamente, tutto per fare dispetti a me. A quanto dicono, è perché è andato tecnicamente down due volte.

Made a serger maintenance video, and will probably make more real life tutorial content like that, requiring real life filming with lights. Sewing tech innards basically force me to film on my phone, and I only learned to lock exposure halfway through. The next one will be even better. #sewing #serger #overlock #maintenance #cleaning

There seems to be strange avoidance of conflict in #repair and #maintenance studies. Use, maintenance and repair are presented as a relationship of care, the fragility of the material and the #technology is emphasized etc.

But then Denis and Pontille, for example, take the people who remove graffiti as "maintainers" and don't talk about what graffiti means? What conflicts it and its removal) entails about public space?

Been thinking again about recent #ThingUmbrella survey results and also what @inthehands emphasized recently, i.e. that "Software development is an intensely social discipline.". I fully agree.

Too much power in a programming language/tooling means no or very few struggles. On the other hand, very few struggles also mean very little incentives for community to form/grow, to exchange, to debate, to contribute... (basically also one of the more indirect morals of The Lisp Curse)

60-80% of the survey feedback (finaly comments) are along the lines of "thi.ng is amazing", "thi.ng has been a huge inspiration", "a real treasure trove", "love the project", "thi.ng is awesome and a joy to work with"... Hearing this makes my heart jump for joy!

Yet, I'm also keenly aware there are aspects of these projects which cause people to "struggle", and I'm also constantly working on improving the DX & docs for everyone, including creating new custom tooling and automation...

Today, I spent most of my time on new tooling to extract the almost 800 code examples embedded in API docs to individual source files, in order to run/try them directly from the command line... With the vast scope of the larger project, this means each time there's a new update/tool like this, there're 100s (sometimes 1000+) of source files to check, to edit and verify, mostly manually (today I managed write the tool, but only updated a few dozen source files...)

I'm often feeling the effort & time spent on these tasks is becoming harder to justify, if there's so little feedback for all the documentation materials which are actually there. The mostly vague complaints about docs missing, being confusing or difficult topics are not really helpful to improving these aspects. I also can't help but wonder why there's been so very, very little offers to help with that (if people have issues, the least is to be constructive about it...)

How do other OSS project maintainers deal with this? Has this ever been an issue for you? Apart from investing even more time in these things, what else can I do? The 150+ example projects don't seem to help either... Part of this discussion feels like catch-22...

The marina down the canal quoted £400 + parts for an engine service. I'm told it's a fair price. I've booked it for Monday, the week after next.

I was also told to keep the old belts that get replaced, in case of a future belt emergency.

Here's the checklist.

@tante I also really love how #maintenance is such a core feature of the game. The way it creates a relationship to an object (the car) by making the care work for it a central, "physical" game mechanic. It's the opposite of the frictionless, touchscreeny experiences we live in.

This interview with Linus Torvalds on the qualities that maintainers need (in contrast to developers) and maintainer fatigue summarizes a few things I keep bringing up:

  • maintenance is not "bugfixing" as a lesser/different kind of coding, it's about experience, about having done a lot of things to give context to what you are seeing and to have some understanding of what second order consequences a choice might have
  • maintenance is about collaboration and cooperation with others, about bridging gaps between contributors and their goals

I'd have added that maintenance is #care work: Caring about and for the project/product and its development and sustainability, caring about and for the social structure that the project/product is built upon, caring about and for the people who will be using the product/project or who will otherwise be affected.

#Maintenance doesn't work without empathy, about thinking through long term consequences.

Move slow and fix stuff.

Saying "no" to pull requests that just add functionality that hasn't been previously discussed or identified as needed may be my least favourite thing about maintaining code...
I think it's necessary to raise awareness in fly-by contributors that these create long term workload for other people. Though, no matter how much I sugar-coat my "no", I always feel like I'm being the vilain of someone else's story...

I never noticed how #Maintenance has the French word "maintenant" in it, which means "now", and is composed of the words hand (main) and to hold (tenir). It speaks to how maintenance requires attention and engagement with things as they are. It also reminds me of one of the perks of maintenance work is that it grounds and connects you to the present.
