Grant #Shapps and Rishi #Sunak announcing hundreds more North Sea oil and gas licences makes it even clearer the #Tories - and the rest of the status quo forces - mean by 'net zero', we'll keep emitting carbon dioxide (and methane) for as long as possible, so the people who really run the world - the wealthy - can keep making their increasing profits. And 'hope' someone in December 2049 will reduce emissions off a cliff.
Once these new drilling sites are open, that's it. They're there for the decades the 'lucky' fossil fuel companies say they can be.
Because to remove them afterwards will immediately be seized on as 'anti-capitalism'. And anyway, the system has already made sure no-one will be allowed who wants to, any power to change that.
Even if the planet was on fire, to the ruling class, it must end with the #capitalist making record 'profits'.

Today's #AIs are really just large statistical models gobbling up billions of data points from all over the internet and regurgitating them without understanding a thing. Like parrots. Super parrots. Very expensive ones.
IMHO it works well in conversation. When somebody says "#AI will take your jobs" you respond "Oh yes, all those billion-dollar super-parrots will do a much better job than me."

I agree that is an important distinction for sure. I'm actually of the belief that most jobs outside of garbage collection, farming, water treatment and healthcare are not "essential"... A la #davidgraeber 's famous book Bullshit Jobs ... This puts artists, lawyers, accounts, copywriters, traders and a whole host of others w/o a means to survive in #capitalist society...if we lived in star trek world it wouldn't matter;)
I genuinely find it hilarious that #ElonMusk officially bought #Twitter as a "town square" and months later went full #capitalist by punishing those that wouldn't pay only to then have a paranoid fit about large language models stealing the data he's stealing and essentially locking even those that did pay, out of the town square, because the data is worth more than the actual people that created it to him 😮💨😂

I could be wrong, but I don’t think that the developers and thousands of Mastodon instance maintainers are aiming to “win” anything.
The Dorsey/Musk/Zuckerberg mentality is complete nonsense and is unsustainable. What even is a “win” in this context? More money? More followers? More celebrity? More power? Who cares! 🥱

It's no surprise that when #opensource projects come out of the woodwork and beat the pants off of proprietary offerings, people think it's revolutionary. When #code is crafted with passion, when products are built with intention, everything falls into place.
(For us, money enables us to continue dev, it doesn't drive it.)
