A new study by a team of mostly San Francisco Bay Area scientists that found human-caused climate warming has increased the frequency of extremely fast-spreading California wildfires has come into question from the unlikeliest of critics—its own lead author.
Notice how essentially nobody in Washington asks “if we can afford” an $886 billion defense budget?
No, we only hear that when we need health care, or student debt relief, or climate action, or paid family leave, or universal pre-K, or child-poverty relief.
@rbreich Capitalism is the problem..
Defense appropriations mean more money to the military industrial complex...more money to Lockheed Martin, Ratheion, Boing, Northrop, General Dynamics, etc, etc, etc. Lobbyists and campaign contributions ensure that the fix is in. The poor have no Lobbyists, they do not make campaign contributions . Churches used to do that for them but they too have become big business. #voteblue #capitalist
I think one of the causes behind the meteoric rise of the skibidi toilet's popularity is thanks to one simple fact--at least yet, the videos aren't SELLING anything. No in-video ads, no sponsored products shilled as fake "reviews", no "buy this [whatever] in my Tiktok shop!" it's proof that weirdness can still connect with people, that the Hollywood takeover of grassroots-made online content is still not quite complete. It gives an extremely oldbie content creator like me some hope...
Is the #skibidi toilet the sign that the Redemption Arc/Era of #YouTubePoop / weird internet videos is upon us?
Skibidi is a return to a pre #YouTube age where you actually had to work to find popular, homemade content, it was shared among real people, not carefully crafted by #algorithms designed to find the most #viral way to sell things. Internet videos made by regular people that are just allowed to be #weird, something that #corporateMedia (including the many, many, many #capitalist brands who have purchased their own "#influencers") would never allow to grace its airwaves (remember tv antennas? Lol).
As a very oldbie #contentCreator who WOULD like to at least make my many many hours of creating videos and livestreams break even financially, but who has too many pesky ethics to ever sell out and shill products I don't care about (pretending we lived in a world where capitalism-unfriendly content like mine could ever get paid sponsorships), I still miss the times when commercial-sanitized content intended foremost to sell things was not just rare but nonexistent, when people made videos just because it was fun. There was no "online famous even to the masses" - - if you were "famous" at all, it was only among fans of niche humor and Topics like yourself.
I'm not saying today's standards for viral content shouldn't be allowed to exist... If you enjoy that kind of content, great. I just miss when it didn't completely dominate every mainstream platform (aka ones that more than ten people use, unlike mastodon 😏) and there was still room for weirdness to flourish. And maybe the popularity of joyful nonsense like Skibidi means that type of content isn't completely dead....
At least until Skibidi toilet plushies go up for sale.
Imagine if a population of people, a society, from the day they were born only watched Disney movies. All the information they were exposed to on social media ("TV", "radio", "internet", etc.) was Disney
Maybe this is why when saying the facts that, e.g., "Jet travel is fundamentally harmful because it emits CO2 at high altitudes", the go-to bleb reply is "I suppose you'd ban Formula 1 racing cars too!"
from #quietquitting to the #greatresignation... and now 'going it less' (featured in a Guardian report on people looking for easier jobs).
For decades a minority rejected the central #capitalist narrative of working hard for a better life, but this suspicion that #capitalism is not a system with our benefit at its heart is becoming ever more evident.
Unless capitalists can reinvigorate the reward for work narrative & make it true, there may be trouble ahead!
Can't keep livin' like: you and yours, me and mine
Can't keep livin' large pretending it's all just fine
Truth veiled by the phrase: fate can be unfair
What if we fought for Change, not the kind that's spare?
It's been said before the life we live is like a race
But everbody's got a predetermined starting place
Ready, set, Boom! Two steps, you're done you've won!
Ready, set, Boom! No steps: killed by the starting gun
People live their lives based on who they were born to
Born middle, born rich, future ahead of you
Born poor? That's the dark side of the establishment
A death sentence, call it #capitalist punishment!
The #GOP candidates’ debate getting underway. The media on site for the Fox News/RNC event is restricted to watching from the Fiserv Forum players’ parking garage.
Interesting how this supposed #capitalist advocates for dirty, extractive, expensive, finite 19th century technology rather than low cost, clean technology.
I guess math basic math competency is not a requirement for the presidency
Don't get me wrong: It's good if individuals do "their part" in tackling the climate crisis, by changing their habits and lifestyles, but blaming them, when its clearly the #capitalist system's fault is just wrong.
Be #vegan, consume sustainably, ride your #bike, don't fly.
There are many good reasons to do so, e.g.:
👉 it's the right thing to do
👉 it's healthy
👉 you're a role-model for others
👉 if many people do this, it slightly changes how companies act.
👉 it fosters your awareness for the issues
But also be aware that its a droplet on a hot stone. Non-wealthy individuals won't fix the climate with their daily choices. We have to demand action by the big players.
And I don't mean blame China!
All of us need to demand radical climate action by our governments.
#China is building an open national chip plan around #RiscV
Chinese RISC-V Alliance was established in 2018 to build out a full open-source chip ecosystem by 2030.
Long-term goal is to create a platform with full chip development platform with open-source chip designs, electronic design automation, and verification tools.
Chinese institutions are currently developing open-source EDA tools to design RISC-V chips.
@yogthos the #PRC is #capitalist in that it never was communist, but operated on state-capitalism at most.
In fact, I'd argue it's worse in terms of investment and economy cuz unlike the USA or India one's success depends on being in good terms with Winnie Pooh and pissing him off is basically a death sentence to any serious business.
That makes it bad even for convinced hardcore capitalists...
"#Musk was also growing increasingly uneasy with the fact that his technology was being used for warfare. That month, at a conference in Aspen attended by business and political figures, Musk even appeared to express support for Vladimir #Putin. “He was onstage, and he said, ‘We should be negotiating. Putin wants peace—we should be negotiating peace with Putin,’ ”"
Jeff #Bezos’ “#Amazon Is Investing in #AI-Assisted #Apartheid in #Palestine: Since 2014, Amazon has been pouring $billions into #Israel, contributing to illegal settlement programs and the relentless #surveillance of #Palestinians. Israel’s dystopian end goal: to compile biometric profiles and security ratings for every resident of the West Bank.”
@georgetakei It is more than sad that we have a system that is so dysfunctional that to avoid a #Christofascist takeover I must vote for a party and candidate that has shown no ability to overcome its decades of complicity with a #neoliberal#CorporateOligarchy sufficiently to deal with the #ClimateEmergecny that cannot be managed by a #capitalist system. Almost by definition #capitalism will fail us. Perhaps it will buy us a little time to make real changes that are necessary.
The good part of any #NonCompeteClause in #Germany is that those are null and void if the former #Employer doesn't pay them as if they were still employed for the duration of their clause, since it restricts their ability to earn the same amount of #income.
And I think that's a valid balance between preventing competitiors from "hiring away key personnel" and the ability for small businesses to defend themselves against "hostile corrosion" tactics...
Him being a convicted #capitalist who is #consistent in his logic and understanding makes him if not agreeable at least respectable and acceptable, since he's not nitpicking only the aspects he likes and disregards what he dislikes.
I have somehow managed to find myself in Kidzania in London (don’t ask!) and this place is a #capitalist dystopia of epic proportions.
Child #labour, mass #consumerism, waged work and I shit thee neigh, they even have a Shell station. With #climatecatastrophe, this is blatant propaganda.
"A ... feature of ... #capitalist societies is the tendency of the market to take over the production ... of goods that were previously produced, maintained, and distributed by nonmarket means. Yet, there is a wide range of disagreement regarding the proper extent of the market in providing ... goods."
Climate change is an immediate threat to the majority of the world's population.
We need a local, regional, state, national, and international "moon shot" type of concentration of effort using available resources while developing and advancing new science and technologies to counteract the damage humans have caused.
Without this type of all-out, universal cooperation, human civilization, and perhaps humanity itself, are in imminent danger of extinction.
