Why birds and their songs are good for our mental health
"Birds help us feel more connected with nature and its health effects
One hypothesis on nature’s salubrious effects, known as the attention restoration theory, posits that being in nature is good for improving concentration and decreasing the mental fatigue associated with living in stressful urban environments. Natural stimuli, such as birdsong, may allow us to engage in “soft fascination,” which holds our attention but also allows it to replenish."
It's nonstop birds and hawthorns in bloom, out here in the middle of nowhere, clear of the industrial outskirts of Stoke-on-Trent.
Spring on the Caldon canal seems to be a few weeks behind the rest of the midlands, judging by what's blooming and the size of moorhen chicks and goose goslings.
Here's Friday afternoon's chorus of male korimako/NZ bellbirds, singing in the rain in the middle of the O Tāne Aotearoa/New Zealand Gardens of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.
The oldest native trees in the O Tāne Aotearoa gardens were planted between 1910 and 1927, and now it feels like a real native forest right in the middle of the city. The korimako certainly approve. Their numbers are highest here, in Riccarton Bush, and in the Port Hills.

I'm Nelson, your Jawns.Club admin, and a #climateJustice activist living in the Mt. Airy neighborhood of #Philadelphia. I love #bicycles / #ebikes, #birdsong, and #solar power. Last year I moved house entirely by bicycle. My favorite band is #Queen, and I'm slowly collecting #vinyl from local musicians. I sing in the bath and carry a song in my heart.
#ClimateDiary am walking in the park on a beautiful sunny day in what feels like a normal temperature for a British summer. I can actually hear birds other than crows singing, for the first time in ages. ItMs wonderful and you could almost believe life is normal. #birdsong
Nightingales are great singers, but how well can they hit the tone? 🎶 Scientists from Daniela Vallentin’s group at our institute found that nightingales can imitate the pitch of whistles in real time! Read more: https://www.bi.mpg.de/news/2023-07-vallentin
Surprised to find the gatekeepers of this pathway were crows. The #birdsong today once past the gatekeepers was especially wonderful (not from the crows I hasten to add) #CrowToll#corvids#Musselburgh#EastLothian
No idea what sort of birds these are — sorry about the dogs. We heard this cacophony while out walking this evening. I thought they might be Eastern Screech Owls, but now not so sure.
