I like it when you take a picture and accidentally make birdsong seem visible. #birds #birdsong #photography #SongSparrow

No idea what sort of birds these are — sorry about the dogs. We heard this cacophony while out walking this evening. I thought they might be Eastern Screech Owls, but now not so sure.

Video shot on the edge of the woods this evening — deep shadows and a bit of darkening sky. No idea what birds are making noise. There are also a couple of dogs barking in the distance.

Sounds of Spring

Did you know that female Northern Cardinals sing as well as the males? This one would like you to know that!

Can you point me to recent resources for Animal Music? Articles, Research papers etc.
I am preparing a summary/overview in the context of Evolutionary Musicology. I have already a lot of material I just wanna make sure I don't miss something important from the latest research.

I left the Merlin Bird ID app running for 20 minutes when I was out walking Arthur this morning and there were lots of songs surrounding us!
No linnets, tree creepers, goldcrest or green woodpeckers detected today. I did see a green woodpecker though, but he wasn't very vocal for a change! #nature #birdsong

We live in what's like a silent spring. Though it's not spring, of course. I don't hear any birds around us now. It's sad.

"Winter Song" is my new about those bright winter days of lemon and pink skies, when the air is clear and cold, and the rings louder than ever.

As well as the little robin belting out his sweet song, I've included other winter birds: fieldfare, waxwing, redwing, and (my favourites) starlings.

Thanks for looking. 🙏

Here's Friday afternoon's chorus of male korimako/NZ bellbirds, singing in the rain in the middle of the O Tāne Aotearoa/New Zealand Gardens of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.

The oldest native trees in the O Tāne Aotearoa gardens were planted between 1910 and 1927, and now it feels like a real native forest right in the middle of the city. The korimako certainly approve. Their numbers are highest here, in Riccarton Bush, and in the Port Hills.

This is the first time I've ever heard the song of the #AmericanDipper, so I've known about it most of my life. That is one of the most beautiful bird songs I've ever heard.
