Are you on Mastodon or the Fediverse? (well, duh? 🙂)

Are you Canadian?

Would it be great if the Canadian Parliament had its own Fediverse Server for Parliamentarians and officials to use instead of Corporate Social Media?

If you answered yes to these questions then you should sign and share this House of Commons Petition e-4769!

If not, hey, you can still share (and maybe sign!) :=)

My cup overflows with anger toward these lying, deceiving, murderous, oil and gas companies. So this morning, I did something I've never done before in hopes the people coming home from their long weekends in Tofino and Ucluelet get the message.

Please Boost.

Hot take: Hoping people will look out for each other is causing deaths and disability.

Story from my hospitals in #BC: last week, maybe 5% of workers were masking. Even though everyone knew that everyone is sick right now. But no one wanted to be the one to stand out. NO ONE.

This week, all it took was for someone in leadership to say that it's mandated that you mask, and now compliance is almost 100% and no one is complaining, NO ONE ...1/?

If anyone actually believes we are in anyway prepared, or even preparing, for the next inevitable pandemic....

it was 4 years today a doctor in Wuhan reported on social media a suspected SARS case

we are heading into year 5 of Covid, watching public health twist itself into deliberate apathy, and setting up years ahead of ever greater mutation waves, disability, death

and everyone seems fine with it

Hey.. Covid isn't over.
It's actually worse than the first few waves. That's our baseline now.
You have a 1 in 10 chance of becoming disabled after infection.
You can get sick up to 5 times a year.
You will never have immunity.
You are typically infectious for 12 days.
Deaths are being under reported by up to %60.
Why aren't you wearing a mask?

Don't let corrupt politicians steal your health away.

I recently took an indoor training course in which I was the only one #masked. That didn’t bother me as it’s not the first time and I’ve grown quite accustomed to people’s strange looks.

What truly affected me was the sad fact that when we partnered up at the start, I was last to be picked due to my #mask.

It was clear everyone felt that if they partnered with me they’d have to mask up as well. I told the last unfortunate fellow who was forced to sit with me that was not the case, he was relieved.

Over the 2 day course I found out my new partner had already taken the same course a month previous and barely retained anything.

I was shocked by his inability to remember numbers or follow basic instructions in a timely matter. Despite this, I continuously helped him along, explaining things thoroughly through my mask. At the end he gratefully thanked me for helping him so much through the course.

Upon leaving on the last day, I overheard my former partner admitting to the teacher that since he’s had #covid (multiple times) he now has difficulty remembering things, which is affecting his studies.

So, next time you need to partner in a course don’t assume the only person masked is an incompetent fool, when it’s most probably quite the opposite.

My wife and I have managed to avoid #covid19bc thus far through maintained #masking and social #distancing. Life changed and we’ve adjusted. Masking shows our strength and resilience not our weakness.

Pink has cancelled her Vancouver concert due to a 'respiratory illness', likely can't say Covid for insurance purposes

Calls into question why they are creating super spreader events - and I get they have performing contracts, and their own drive to entertain, but too many have been drawn into the Urgency of Normal and it will kill them and us with mass illness

Screw that system

with the US CDC urging masking, making it mandatory in health settings amid the rise of variant JN.1 and WHO today listing that as a separate variant of interest - The Netherlands recording it's highest wastewater viral load ever (and they've been leaders in monitoring)

You would think Canada and the provinces would be holding urgent pre-Christmas press conferences, and enacting some measures

Both Covid and Climate are similar in the way capitalist captured governments have perpetuated mythical solutions for basically non or unworkable responses

Covid: non-existent 'herd immunity', made up 'immunity debt', vaccine only approach - basically let 'er rip, normalize the impacts

Climate: impossible 'carbon capture', unrealistic 'nuclear build', offset coal with methane

The system is designed to worsen outcomes, not heal

We hope to start posting lots of stories from people all over BC and other content to help make this happen. If you have a story about the need for inter-community public transport, please say Hi and reply! 🙂

This morning my former top gas pipeline engineer friend & source texted me about
@sarahcox's new exposé on proposed massive new $$$$ subsidies for fracking & LNG in BC. He just said "it's time to shut that whole fossil fuel industry down."

That's how bad this is - former gas pipeline engineers are militating against gas.

POSTPONED
Unfortunately BC’s 1st Clean Air Festival had to be postponed due to deteriorating air quality from wildfire smoke (ironically enough).

We were looking forward to building Corsi-Rosenthal boxes for BC classrooms, mask decorating, live music and more. Clean air strategies keep everyone healthy.

Our thoughts are with those affected by the BC wildfires this summer.

We are aiming for a rescheduled date in September. Stay tuned!

Vancouver Island University, my employer, is now threatening to remove the encampment and have people arrested. I'm absolutely sick.

I had corresponded with our President on May 1. I sent this to our Chancellor, Chair and President today.

Dear Chancellor Sayers, Chair Anderson, and President Saucier,

I am extremely concerned by the escalatory words and actions of VIU today given the encampment’s peaceful and respectful nature and disposition to date. The President has stated to me in her response quoted below on May 1 "that VIU’s approach to the encampment is based on respect and peace for protest and freedom of expression.”

The locking of all campus buildings today and the very clear threat by VIU Security (see attached noticed link) to have peace officers remove tents and equipment under the Trespass Act under threat of arrest is completely contradictory to the President’s statement and is exactly the approach that I flagged to the President as being extremely dangerous and likely to result in harm to the protesters and deep embarrassment to the University itself. There are peaceful ways to do this.

As an institution that is supposed to be fully immersed in the spirit and action of Truth and Reconciliation, I find these statements and actions to be horrendously contradictory, misguided, colonial, and dangerous.

As an individual employee, VIUFA faculty member, and member of this community on Snuneymuxw, Coast Salish and Nuuchanulth lands I am embarrassed, and I beg the University to reconsider and reverse its actions.

Sincerely,
Chris Alemany

You know Cathedral Grove, right? Trees that are hundreds of years old on the highway to Tofino on Vancouver Island? (It was featured as part of the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.)

Well, the bright lights of forestry machines were visible on its borders this morning.

I don't know if they are taking any Old Growth, maybe not, but the forest around the Grove (MacMillan Park) is critical to protect it from wind storms and fire.

It’s at risk.

The Canadian municipality of Central Saanich, 'the land of plenty,' is plenty fed up with 'X' (formerly known as Twitter). Our municipality is leaving Elon Musk's 'X' by April. The decision was made largely due to the platform's change in ownership & "updated moderation policy." As an elected councillor, I'm so glad we're moving away from X. Are there any other municipalities leaving Musk in the dust? https://www.centralsaanich.ca/our-community @jsatre @cgainor @SueStroud @GottaLaff
