Ach, sieh an. Eine Kollegin, mit der ich ganz früher bei Medizinübersetzungen gerne zusammengearbeitet habe, und die seit Jahren hauptsächlich für Indie-Verlage Literatur übersetzt, hat einen Ratgeber für Übersetzende von Self-Publishing-Literatur geschrieben. #IndieVerlag#xl8#SelfPublishing https://www.bdue-fachverlag.de/detail_book/169
Hello Fediverse. This is my #Introduction. I'm an audiovisual and editorial #translator looking to connect with fellow #translators and #language lovers to exchange ideas on: why languages are great, why translation is amazing, and how we can navigate the #translation industry now AI is becoming more and more impactful. #Xl8
"Machine language deceives readers about authorship and claims to truth. In the context of AI systems, the term 'translation' is used for a form of machine language with no person behind it, completely unrelated to the exacting, thoughtful, responsible work that goes into a human translation."
#xl8#MedWriting
Eugen Rochko recently posted a thought:
"I think it comes down to, AI has no place in the arts. Machine-generated art has the appearance of what it is emulating, but no substance. Like cake made entirely of fondant. Or cardboard."
'Aiono' replied: "Also even if it could, like why would you automate one of the most entertaining part of being a human?"
And replace 'writing' with 'translation'. Because contrary to what a lot of people think translation isn't just a matter of replacing words or phrases. It takes creativity to produce a translation that reflects the style and images of the original, especially with creative texts, such as books (both fiction and non-fiction).
Thrilled (lame pun intended...) to see that my first thriller #translation* will be out on 1 November: I translated Michelle Frances' The Boyfriend into Dutch.
My last toot about the difference between the French word “pinte" (quart) and the English word “pint” got quite a few likes and boosts (by my standards, anyway).
I hope all those likes mean “oh man, I didn't know either… thanks for clearing that up” and not “bwahahaha, what an ignoramus."
I just plugged a snippet of French into #DeepL and its translation of "son”—a possessive pronoun that is gender-neutral with respect to the posessor—“just happened" to be “his."
If shenanigans like this are going on with the basics, makes you wonder about the more advanced stuff…
I've been struggling with a lack of motivation at work this summer since returning from #CycleTour2023. Who knew that a new set of headphones for the office would spark such joy (and tempt me down to the office).
Did a little research on the best headphones for classical and jazz and found the Philips SHP9500 to be highly rated and affordable.
What a difference! My old headphones (Bose SoundTrue II) were fine, but these Philips are a huge step up.
If you're a #Translator or an #Interpreter and you happen to be in Brazil from June the 30th to July the 2nd, don't miss out on our #Translation conference:
If you know anything about how #AI is changing the game for subtitling and dubbing translation, please share links with me below.
I’d love to know more about stuff such as machine translation post-editing for subtitling. I’ve never done it, so it’d be useful to hear about other translators’ experience.
A while ago, a fellow translator here was looking for other translators to follow. It’s been 5 months since her post, so I thought I’d ask the same thing: translators, where are you? Boost if you know any translators or professionals working in the translation industry. I’d love to meet fellow translators here so we can get discuss our routines, our joys, CPD, and everything in between.
@Renata@translators EN-DE translator (medical, pharma, biotech etc.) & medical writer here (but not posting much - social media overload since the beginning of pandemic). Also try #xl8 :-)
