I find that one of the hardest things about getting older is that as the years go by, I becomes increasingly difficult to determine if the world really is going to the shitter or if I’m just becoming an angry old man who thinks things were better “in his day.”

On the face of it, it's a good thing that #Sting, Fry, et al. are threatening to resign from the #GarrickClub unless members vote to admit women. They say the scandal is jeopardizing their relations with female colleagues.

But if you ask me, joining a men’s-only club is an inherently misogynistic act. So the real question is, if these Important Artists were so worried about their relationships with women, why would they join Garrick in the first place?

I just want to take this moment to share that the MacBook Air 2017 13 inch model is one of the crappiest laptops Apple ever released. Thanks for listening.

petergarner,
@petergarner@mastodon.world avatar

@heliomass Are you referring to the original MacBook Air (which, while revolutionary in many was, was indeed regarded as over-priced and under powered)? It was was not introduced until 2008... That said, if you're still using it today, well that's on you. LOL

petergarner,
@petergarner@mastodon.world avatar

@heliomass That makes more sense. The 2017-2018 model was afflicted with both Intel processors and the butterfly keyboard. Wife had one before upgrading to an M2 Air (possibly the best laptop Apple has ever made?). Old 2018 Air was handed down to my mother, who mostly uses it for email. The FaceTime camera on those machines is also especially atrocious.

So excited! My partner just reminded me that we've got tickets to the #OSM tonight to see #BarbaraHannigan.

If you're not into classical music & that name doesn't mean anything, she is one of Canada's most incredible artists. A world-class soprano (mostly interpreting the extremely difficult modern repertoire) AND a great conductor. And she often does both at the same time!

Do yourself a favour and check this video out:

Hoping it won’t be long before the Apple tech press gets bored of covering the Vision Pro. Most apps seem like they’re iPad apps suspended in space, and the number of readers who have or plan to get a Vision Pro must be low. If it’s going to become a staple of tech reporting, people will tune out.

petergarner,
@petergarner@mastodon.world avatar

@heliomass I hear you, and I tend to agree. It is a completely new computing platform and interaction model, however, so I expect we'll have to endure a few more months of it at least. That said, I prefer hearing about Vision Pro to coverage of AI or the DMA... so pick your poison? :)

Our TD home insurance went from CAD 830 to CAD 1003 annually (tax included). Didn't claim anything for 2 decades though. Need to put a phone call in in January, assuming the call centres are low staffed around the holidays.

@Hansonthebike We go through this nonsense almost every year. And every year my OH calls them and they manage to find a way to bring it back down, or even lower it! But it grinds my gears that we have to do it again every year.

@notjustbikes What a fantastic video. I'm a Montrealer, and you did a fantastic and balanced job of characterizing our city. We've come a long way, but we still have so very far to go.
I hope some of our municipal leaders watch it. It's so valuable to get an honest, balanced, and objective view. standing ovation

Many are asking our stance on Threads, so I’ll repeat what we said some months back.

We won’t pre-emptively defederate from Threads.
Users can themselves decide to block threads.
(If we were to defederate, users can’t anymore decide to un-block themselves.)

We will keep a close eye on all developments with Threads joining the Fediverse, and when we see trouble, we might reconsider this statement.

See the followup post for instructions on how to block a domain for your account.

Advocates for - IF YOU HAVE A SITE, have you installed the ActivityPub plugin? https://wordpress.org/plugins/activitypub/

At the State of the Word address this week, Matt Mullenweg was asked about support for the plugin, and he commented that less than 5,000 sites had installed it. So he wasn't sure how interested people are in it.

So... if you have a WP site, let's start installing that plugin and making more sites available via ActivityPub! 😀

petergarner,
@petergarner@mastodon.world avatar

@danyork @StephenRees So I have a blog on wordpress.com, and it appears that adding the ActivityPub plugin requires a paid account.

Does this “Enter the Fediverse" toggle give me the same functionality without having to go to a paid plan?

ok look I know this is really stupid and pedantic, but come on, we’ve had 26 years to learn this

It's Wi-Fi

not Wifi or WiFi or wifi or wi fi

Wi-Fi. Hyphenated. Both words capitalized.

thank you for coming to my ted talk

(while you're here, “log in" is two words when being used as a verb… your login button or link should not say "login”, because the action they take is to "log in”)

petergarner,
@petergarner@mastodon.world avatar

@marcoarment As a language professional, I have to disagree. There's no real reason for wifi to be hyphenated or a proper noun (even internet is rarely a proper noun nowadays). Language usage changes. It's a thing. And you're old enough now to see those changes happen. It wasn't that long ago that the use of the “singular they" was frowned upon in formal texts. Now it's commonplace (and that's a good thing!). If you want language to be static, learn French. ducks

@marcoarment Well, I learned something. I had no idea it was a trademark. Thanks for for that!

@viticci Can I just say, your command of English blows my mind. As someone who also speaks a second language fluently (French), I understand how hard (nay, impossible) it is to be perfectly idiomatic.

I am amazed at how idiomatic your English is on Connected. You never make mistakes with verb tenses or (perhaps more impressively) prepositions. And you seemingly never translate Italian idioms into English.

I hope your cohosts realize how impressive and rare this is.

My last toot about the difference between the French word “pinte" (quart) and the English word “pint” got quite a few likes and boosts (by my standards, anyway).

I hope all those likes mean “oh man, I didn't know either… thanks for clearing that up” and not “bwahahaha, what an ignoramus."
