Ceasefire Now! From the river to the sea, Palestine will soon be free, with justice and equality for all.

Here, where I want to be.

I am susceptible to poetry, excited by technology, especially making fabrics and textiles.
Sumerian myth rocks my world; so do some bits of math and some bits of poetry.
I ferment things.

I translate for a living. BDS! BLM! Trans rights are human rights!

I am deeply regretting that for my political satire series I went with a head of government who is merely a faceless Lovecraftian Elder God with a skull-collecting hobby.

He seems kind of understated these days.

Should have picked a cross between the South Dakota Puppy Shooter and Liz Truss instead ...

Fun.

Now do one whose laws are based on the medieval deliberations of an educated class in Europe on a late bronze age, Near Eastern, tribal society myths, that ends up with nukes.
For extra pleasure, superimpose its laws on Common Law on top of Ottoman jurisprudence.

I’ve been thinking about this framework all day.

Shunra,
@Shunra@wandering.shop avatar

@dataandpolitics I think “move fast and break things" was a statement of tactics in a war.
The unstated tactic was surprise, because the rest of us didn't know a war had been declared.

All this does imply a BUNCH about why tech looks like it does today, and what consequences this should have for the perpetrators of this war on the rest of us.

Luckily we probably didn't!

Deterrent patrols last 90 days, so if a sub put to sea before Truss got to write the LOLR it would still be at sea when she was forced to resign.

I am going to stick my neck out and suggest that a smaller-than-Russian-scale attack using the same drones against a much smaller target—Israel—with front-rank defenses is not going to succeed terribly well. Also going to suggest waiting for the other shoe, er, 2000lb bomb, to drop in Tehran a few hours later.

it has already been quite successful: Israel is closing down its airspace at half past midnight, and shut down its schools for tomorrow, at least.
People planning trips abroad (for the long Passover break - about 3 weeks - due to start soon) are restating all their plans.

Maximum disruption without any weapon dropped.

(I hate wars. I hate all wars. There have been too many recently, with too many beloved people targeted, some (TOO MANY) killed.)

I opened a news site.

Saw about Israel targeting the grandchildren of a Hamas leader.

Closed the news site. Anyone who thinks that's ok can just block me right now.

Shunra,
@Shunra@wandering.shop avatar

@cstross Yup.
The Israeli policy of home demolitions (destroying the homes of people it decided were terrorists - without trial) has been in force since as far as I can remember.

Specifically, I remember the summer when I turned 12, when my father (a social worker, no less) stood guard while other members of the military did that. I did not speak to him for half a year.
He did not desist.

Killing grandkids is even worse.

Interview with @paulbiggar on Instagram about Israel's heinous "Project Lavender” and “Where's Daddy?” software murderers.
Interviewer Zein Rahma asks great questions, this leaves me with a clear understanding of this nightmarish project.

In his latest, I think @pluralistic put his finger right on the problem with adopting LLM's to write code.

https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/01/human-in-the-loop/

Even if LLM's were far better at generating code, he's right that this is totally a reverse centaur situation. The nature of the technology means all generated code has to be reviewed. Code review is a net drag, even in the best of circumstances, meaning LLM's in the long run won't help developers but rather place even more demands on our overloaded faculties.

Shunra,
@Shunra@wandering.shop avatar

@cmdln AND with why machine translation does not in any way help translators, despite all the suits thinking that it should. Its the same problem, MT is reverse centaur, and I have plans for a lucrative side gig as an expert witness for when anyone is foolish enough to rely on it for things that matter.

I am a professional translator with about the same amount of experience.

I work with Hebrew<>English.

You are wrong about my language combination. And I your method is certain to lead to errors of a particularly pernicious kind - because the stupid mistakes are infinite, and you cannot train yourself to guess all of them. Which means EVERY PROJECT requires constant vigilance for nuance and meaning lapses.

medical is exactly the sort of place where this is a minefield: a condition with a very similar name is misspelled in the source. There are two options, and the MT chooses a plausible one.

Oops, it's entirely wrong, but it fits grammatically and in most senses.
Oops, target language doctors rely on this, and harm the patient.

Avoidable? Only if you read the source as closely as the target. I.e.: translate it. So where's the saved time?

How can I now get rid of this cardboard box and wrapping paper which appears to play a key role in my cats' daily life.
I put it up while vacuuming and forgot about it and they cast it to the floor again so they could resume sitting in it. #kittens #TuxedoCats #AnimalFriendship

The rules are, once we give a cat paper to rustle and a box, they stay.
Sam has a nice rectangle of wrapping paper that he likes, in my bedroom. It's been there since 2020. Along with the orange carrot.
