Every day another cautionary tale for larger organizations why they should be ditching Birdshite/$8chan and jumping to a social network that lets them self host (e.g. #fediverse#mastodon#friendica#akkoma etc) so that they aren't setting themselves up to be under the capricious control of some other Silicon Valley Techbro or his billionaire financiers (e.g. #Bluesky, #PostNews, #substack Notes, etc.) who will inevitably pull the same maneuver eventually. A lesson they will eventually learn? If I were a betting man my mone would be on "no" but fingers crossed! On another note, I guess my account isn't safe after all with this recycling new recycling policy. Fuck it. I'm never logging back into that site again. If my placeholder strategy of keeping the account be deactivating it fails then so be it. #ElonMusk#twitter#TwitterMigration

I can’t support #Substack in light of their announcement today. They have a choice whether to support fascist content, and acting like they are forced to platform these views is unacceptable.
I am planning to move my newsletter to a different platform, and will be working on figuring out the migration the rest of this week. I am very relieved that I chose to build my platform as a newsletter, since I own my audience and can take my subscriber list with me.
Platforming Nazis, financing them, and lending them your credibility by sharing a platform with them empowers Nazis, and the management of #Substack have made it clear that they're going to continue doing so.
Social media companies better learn how to curate, fast. Luckily, there's new #research to help them, by Arechar et al (including @Drand among others). Check out my discussion of that research and what it means for social media in my (still free!) #Substack !
A little bit of #Crowdsourcing thanks to the tool of @themarkup: Has anyone found other sites, that seem to be also throttled by #Twitter? Any ideas?
Twitter is Still Throttling Competitors’ Links—Check for Yourself
Loading links to #Bluesky, #Facebook, #Instagram, and #Substack takes far longer than to other sites. We built a tool so you can check any domain you like…
So…Substack management and founders are openly saying they don’t care about monetizing and boosting literal Nazis on their platform. He couldn’t even say he wouldn’t have a literal neo-Nazi on his podcast again because their point of view has cache in the US now, the irony of platforming by people like them being lost. Independent creators who use Substack I implore you to use the option that lets you port your content and get it hosted on Ghost if for no other reason to to keep your own conscience clear. #Substack Note by Hamish McKenzie on Substack
It feels like the world is ending from every possible direction.
Maybe you feel like your world is ending too. And neither of us benefits from putting on a fake smile and keeping on as if we aren’t dealing with deep, existential, debilitating fear.
So here’s an uncomfortable question: does #marketing work even matter during an apocalypse?
The folks on #Substack dot com has literally, and in so many words, come out in support of hosting Nazi content on their site, claiming doing otherwise is “censorship”. Meanwhile, people can’t post porn on Substack, but that’s somehow not also censorship, I guess.
Just to be clear: Substack is a privately-owned site. It is under no obligation to host any particular content on their service. They choose to associate with and platform Nazis on their site because they want to.
What do you call a bar that willingly serves Nazis? A Nazi bar.
People are skating around the real problem with the #Substack#Nazi admissions. Substack's admission that they are fine with paying Nazis is not really new: they've admitted it before. So why don't all the Substack writers move to technically equally good or better platforms? It's because Substack secretly pays some writers to write, and those other platforms don't. That was the subject of an earlier Substack scandal.
People who mysteriously stay who have a large audience are getting paid off, and that, to them, outweighs being on a Nazi supporting platform.
In 1903, George A. Wyman rode his motorcycle from San Francisco to New York and became the first person to cross the country on a motor vehicle - car or motorcycle. In the summer of 2016, I followed his route on a Zero DSR electric motorcycle. I'm posting my story on Substack. Here's the latest entry, from Sacramento, California, to Reno, Nevada: https://followingwyman.substack.com/p/05-up-and-over-the-sierra-nevada
I am begging people to stop blogging with substack (email bookclubs aside).
every time I click a link it bothers me TWICE to sign in. TWO different pop-ups. I am not accessing these illicitly (well maybe #Substack thinks so) these are not subscriber only articles. I just want to read the article you are sharing that proves your point.
Get a blog (not wordpress though) with an RSS feed. Or at least use a less obnoxious service. No, medium is NOT less obnoxious.
I beg you.
One of my goals for 2024 is to fully embrace the #Fediverse and enable #ActivityPub for my websites... about to install its new plugin for my website https://therealists.org – I will report back on how it goes.
Number one motivation for this is #Substack and their profiting from abhorrent content. Ready for my #SubstackMigration and grateful I can code and run my own independent site
I spoke to @willoremus at @washingtonpost about why Substack’s decision to remove 5 Nazi publications is “little more than a PR move to try to put this controversy behind them, not a real effort to address their content moderation problem.”
(1/2) I bought a teeny tiny watercolor palette & filled it with 6 colors (CMYK + one extra color) from which I can create millions of colors! Here’s my palette in hand. You can read more on my latest blog post
I never really felt comfortable with my identity as a Chinese person because I can't read Chinese, don't speak the languages fluently or even have the same culture as most Chinese people. It took me a while to have a sense of humor about it - these days I embrace being called a tropical fruit 😁
@caseynewton writes how he came to the decision to move Platformer from Substack after three years of building its substantial readership on the online publishing service. He talks about his search for answers from Substack's co-founders, an investigation into pro-Nazi content on the platform and the importance of understanding the thoughts of Platformer's readers.
I've left #Substack, because they haven't deplatformed some of the worst Nazi and white supremacist sites, in spite of calls from many writers to do so.
Anybody who's subscribed to my Substack will automatically get emailed posts from the new site...
