hankg,

@claralistensprechen3rd Among many many positive economic indicators. It's not that things are perfect. It's that if Trump had been POTUS and control of congress for the past four years much of this wouldn't be happening. He's already made clear what he plans on doing if he wins, and the only winners are big oil and billionaires. Everyone else is going to get the shaft

@arstechnica I still call Facebook "Facebook" not Meta. I still call Google "Google" not Alphabet. Twitter will forever be "Twitter", unless I'm in a name calling mode and then I call it $8chan.

The puzzle company The New York Times shows stories on the main page of its app that I, as a subscriber, have to pay extra to read without any marking until I tap on the story. Great strategy.

hankg,

@glennf They don't even let you see the writer's name or the sub-title. With the NYT penchant for shitty title writing that makes it even more egregious. It's even stripped out of reader mode. Ah well. I'm not inclined to give them a dime under their current ownership, management, and modus oprandi anyway.

We reached the point where my brain autocorrects "AI" to "pollution".

All the companies touting AI in their products are now telling me they don't care about making human life more difficult if it can earn them a few extra dollars.

hankg,

@thibaultamartin I was thinking in my head last night that IIRC crypto is using more energy than Argentina and now AI using more energy than France, Silicon Valley alone has already reversed what little gains we've had in fighting climate change. All to do absolutely nothing useful except trying to put more billions of dollars in the hands of a few dozen people. It is pure insanity. And just recently Sam Altman was saying we need to invent new energy sources to power AI. Not fight climate change. Not live sustainably. Just to feed this beast.

Record scratch! Tesla in court said the lack of LIDAR should have made their FSD claims being BS self evident?!?! Have they added ditched the camera only plans because they sure as hell never dropped claims of having FSD “next year” as recently as last month. Granted they never applied for more than Level 2 while claiming they had Level 5 already (at the Semi event) or will have it “next year” for almost ten years now. They are way past needing a legal and liability comeuppance. #tesla

at some point I should really write a blog post about my experience with burnout and the factors that led to it (undiagnosed ADHD being a big one, but not the only one), and how I began the recovery process, because I'm certain it would be helpful to a few people. it's very emotionally draining to write about though, and when I think about the things I want to say I end up in analysis paralysis because the story inevitably involves other people who I want to be respectful of.

hankg,

@gsuberland Until one has had burn out, previously called nervous breakdowns, I don't think they understand the depths of what it means. An exploration of the experience and how to dig out of it over time could be very helpful. A common means of respecting people is to revert to a fictionalized story based on the real events. It's more than just a name swap, which may not be sufficient to mask identities. Another alternative is to ask if they mind being included in it and then revert to the fictionalized version if necessary.

I got a real life loupe to use when trying to read some of the SUPER TINY print on integrated circuit packages, but after a quick test, I think it's too powerful. Or maybe the focus point is fixed in a bad spot for what I wanted to do because the chip has to be flat on the table with the loupe flat on the table over top of it to work.

So I'll probably have to get a less powerful one or maybe a basic magnifying glass or something like that.

But in the meantime I can see the pixels on my iPhone!

The mass layoffs and downscaling of Tesla charging network team and plans is even more bizarre as more details come out. It was their one actual differentiator. They are in the position to be essentially the gas station company of EVs. These changes undermine all of that and contrary to Musk's tweets thy aren't reversing course on it at all. Again though, what will happen to their contractual obligations to the US government that just gave them yet another boat load of money to build out more stations? Are they going to take the money and run with it like they did to California way back in the day? #tesla #ElonMusk

Hey, what's your experience with LibreOffice and Collabora?

I have been writing a lot of stuff that's erotic and smutty, and I saw a post suggesting that google might lock me out of my own files because of that.

So it's time for a different place to keep and write my smut.

Also, if there are alternatives to GoogleDocs/Microsoft that I haven't heard of, please share.

I'm hoping for open source, free or one-time purchase situations. No subscriptions.

Thoughts?

hankg,

@HunkThunderzone LibreOffice has been my primary office software for over five years now. I'm not a power user so don't stretch the software at all. I also don't do a lot of document collaboration so any of the interactive collaboration stuff that MS Office has I don't miss. I did a full novel for NaNoWriMo in it and it worked great. The biggest issue with document sharing is that the standard font set is different. It's possible to install the Microsoft fonts if you need to, or stick with universal fonts like Arial, Times New Roman, etc.

More general cloud tools that are available would be NextCloud with Collabora. I've dabbled with it but haven't used it in production. A more specific cloud tool system for writers is Novlr. That has some neat futures as well including direct syncing to Dropbox or Google Drive at the Pro level. Import/Export is possible even in the free tier though.
