While I sympathasize with the striking writers and wish there was a drastically more equitable distribution of the profits from these productions, the fact is I have a backlog of content new and old so long that if I spent 24/7 for the rest of my natural life I couldn't watch it all one time through. In that vein, I am literally right now about to watch the movie "The Firm" for the first time this century.

Even though I'm not even vegetarian much less vegan, I like veganizing meals. If can do multiple things: healthy it up, cut down on costs, cut down on environmental footprint, all while definitely reducing use of animal agriculture. I think my favorite veganization was making a vegan version of Ina Garten's Weeknight Bolognese sauce (link below). Watching some veganization videos today while eating lunch it did remind me of one way I don't like veganizing things: in ways that neuter the nutritional content of the meal. A lot of times this happens by doing stuff like substituting the meat with mushrooms or using a practically nutritionless cheese alternative. The video that prompted this post was a delicious sounding recipe that made "fried prawns" by substituting oyster mushrooms for the shrimp. Delicious, but now it's pretty much just deep fried breading, which is admittedly also delicious :). As a once in a while thing hats off but for making regular meals I like to look for alternatives that keep up the nutritional composition of the dish. And of course, deep frying vegan food isn't going to be much if any healthier for you than the original recipe so keep it as a treat. #longevity #vegan #vegetarian #recipe #PlantBased

hankg,

@Seitansbraten I love mushrooms. They are tasty and by calorie they are pretty packed with micronutrients. They have few calories per pound though and by extension not a lot of proteins, carbs, or fat. In the above example 1 ounce of mushrooms has 6 calories, 0.9 g of protein, and 0.6 g of carbs compared to 1 ounce of shrimp having 28 calories, 6.8 g of protein, and 0.1 g of carbs. Both have 0.1 g of fat. By volume the story gets worse too of course since mushrooms aren't very dense. So in the above example one probably went from having 25-50 calories, 6-10 grams of protein, and whatever micronutrients shrimp has (which is also a lot) in each deep fried prawn plus breading to essentially just the nutrition of the breading.

As to "vegan is not a diet". I don't think I used the word "diet" above but depending on how the term is used it certainly is. Diet = a way of eating, vegan isa diet. Veganism can go beyond that when looking at other purchased products etc. I'm not a vegan by either definition. But a "vegan diet" is a 100% totally legitimate term. Diet = weightloss plan, then that is neutral since even a Twinkie diet can be a weightloss plan, albeit a not very healthy one.

hankg,

@Seitansbraten In English the term is used to refer both to a diet specific definition and the more expansive one. I know plenty of people who eat a vegan diet who don't claim the larger mantle. Perhaps in other languages people are only "allowed" to apply it in the general sense but I've never seen that here. I am not vegan and never plan on becoming vegan. I therefore couldn't care less about the pedantic arguments within the vegan community about the term. In fact years ago I wrote a whole blog post about why I refuse to label myself by my diet (as in eating style) choices. That extends to the broader context here.
I'm Not Labeling Myself By My Diet

@bkoehn@diaspora.koehn.com:> > Dehumanizing and vilifying a person or group of people can provoke what scholars and law-enforcement officials call stochastic terrorism, in which ideologically driven hate speech increases the likelihood that people will attack the targets of vicious claims. Even if we can’t predict how the violence will boil over, continued demonization means we can be increasingly sure it will.

Every day another cautionary tale for larger organizations why they should be ditching Birdshite/$8chan and jumping to a social network that lets them self host (e.g. #fediverse #mastodon #friendica #akkoma etc) so that they aren't setting themselves up to be under the capricious control of some other Silicon Valley Techbro or his billionaire financiers (e.g. #Bluesky, #PostNews, #substack Notes, etc.) who will inevitably pull the same maneuver eventually. A lesson they will eventually learn? If I were a betting man my money would be on "no" but fingers crossed! On another note, I guess my account isn't safe after all with this recycling new recycling policy. Fuck it. I'm never logging back into that site again. If my placeholder strategy of keeping the account be deactivating it fails then so be it. #ElonMusk #twitter #TwitterMigration

I've been looking to diversify my cooking a bit more but also staying healthy. I think I'm going to have to try to make Chetna's red kidney bean curry called Rajma Masala after watching this video. I have to see if I can find those hot peppers near me. Last time I tried the hot pepper selection was pretty pedestrian. #Cooking #spicyfood #ChetnaMakan #veganrecipes #vegan

hankg,

@smellsofbikes My grocery store did have scotch bonnet pepper so maybe should try to use one of those as a replacement but I think that is a step up from the chili pepper she was using. Besides that all they had were jalapeno and poblano.

So...after the better part of a year of slacking on the fitness/diet/longevity things I decided to do a 30 Day Health Reboot. I have all the tools to make a go of it, so let's just get it started. I at least waited until I was a week in to announce the thing :). Far more details in the blog post. TL;DR though is nothing extreme just doing what one is supposed to be doing on a daily basis. #fitness #diet #exercise #longevity #meditation www.nequalsonelifestyle.com/20…

An analogy we often use on the fediverse with respect to its decentralized nature is email. You didn't get an account on "The Email" you got an account on an email server which knew how to talk to other email servers. It is a great analogy. I've fallen into the trap of extending that to think that people used to get decentralized systems and it wasn't a barrier to entry but now they don't thanks to big tech changing expectations. While there is some of that a lot of that perception is rose colored glasses. The problem here goes back to the analysis paralysis of having to pick a server rather than there being some automatic default that "just works". "Didn't we do that with email?" Did we? Most people's first email accounts were from their ISP. Most places didn't have much selection of ISPs so you got "the internet" and "an email address" came along with it. If their first address wasn't a personal one at home it was one from work. Work made the decision for them. Even in the peak days of dialup many people's first internet experience was actually AOL not the raw internet. AOL came with an internet email address that "just worked". The aversion to extra inertia of having to choose servers or services at sign up time may be a bit higher than it was before FAANG took over the internet but it's still back to the same problem: human nature. #FAANG #fediverse #SocialMedia #commentary

hankg,

@sb To be fair to Mastodon that is a fediverse-wide problem. Literally every network I've been on has the issue. If anything Mastodon has it the least and their account portability is the best. It is still not anywhere near where it needs to be though.

Why the hell do I have the "WKRP" theme song running through my head this morning?!?! LOL. I'll spare others by not posting a link to it :)

Watching the social media landscape news the past couple weeks has me in a dual mindset of despondancy and determination about the fediverse. The despondancy comes from the reinforced realism that usage decisions around these systems will forever be driven by FOMO and frictionless entry and our systems aren't really ready for either yet. I have mixed feelings about Mastodon changing onboarding to make it all "mastodon.social" by default (where 90% of the users will go now) but getting rid of the biggest analysis paralysis part of getting people here is vitally important. To be frank, normal people don't give a damn about decentralization or data control they care about FOMO and "it just works". Friendica, my network, has even further to go on that front than Mastodon even. The determination comes from the knowledge that we did get a glimpse of people being able to feel FOMO about the fediverse thanks to Musk's Twitter enshitification. As people, including me, continue to refine the fediverse we could be in a position where more of them feel it enough to stay on the next wave. The fact is I'm not working on these systems to "conquering the world". I'm working on these systems because I enjoy using them on a daily basis and I want to improve that experience for myself and others. I hope that as we improve more will come into the fold and we could eventually hit a critical mass to be a real fraction of the social media space. If we remain niche though I have to be fine with that too. "Be the change you want to see in the world," as the saying goes... #friendica #fediverse #mastodon #SocialMedia #rant #ElonMusk #twitter

One of the many truly disturbing things DeSantis pulled off in the 2022 race was trumping up cases against a handful of black people who supposedly fraudulently registered to vote. The "fraud" was around the implementation of the 2018 ballot initiative that passed with 2/3 voting for it to let ex-felons to vote. It smelled bad when it happened and it only smells worse as time goes on. When people ask me who is worse, Trump or DeSantis, I still say it is Trump because I don't think DeSantis would go through with a literal coup like Trump did in 2020 nor do I think he is as mentally unstable so I'd trust him more with the nuclear football. That is a very very low bar though and DeSantis has proved to excel at some aspects of implementing autocracy that Trump never nailed down well. That may be because of the scale of control of the media markets and government in Florida and outlets like Fox propping up DeSantis more than they would have hoping for a non-Trump Trumpy alternative. Neither of these people should be anywhere near executive power at the scale of governorship or worse POTUS. This is a gift link I found so should not be behind a paywall. #uspoli #trump #desantis #GOP #Election2024 #CivilRights #VotingRights

hankg,

...and it is achieving the intended objective as shown by comments in the article. Black/brown people are afraid to even vote lest this "task force" drum up some reason to come after them and make their lives a living hell.

Among several small steps on "getting my shit together" I'm trying to double down on reading more again. Normally I gamify that with GoodReads, owned by Amazon. This time though I decided to make the leap to the fediverse's version named BookWyrm. I am going with the main instance for now, where you can find my profile and my reading history here #fediverse #Bookwyrm #reading #GoodReads

hankg,

...feel free to connect with me there and/or post your account here if you are a BookWyrm user and want to connect there :)

hankg,

@carstenraddatz_fca Is that a BookWyrm server or something else?

hankg,

@carstenraddatz_fca Awesome! I may have been around the fediverse since 2018 but today is my first day dipping my toe in the BookWyrm side :)

hankg,

@carstenraddatz_fca I see you all are the second biggest instance behind the project's. Nice!

I present the first named release of the Friendica mobile/desktop client: Relatica. It is still very much a work in progress but I'm going to start opening it up for beta usage (early beta). For iOS that will mean me letting up to 100 people into the inside testing team (Apple's limit). For the other platforms I'll be posting binaries/packages/install instructions for Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows in the coming days as well. I also setup a Relatica Matrix room for interactive discussions with me and other users. The README on the GitLab repo will have all those sorts of details. Enjoy! #friendica #FriendicaDev #relatica #flutter #DartLang #fediverse gitlab.com/mysocialportal/rela…

hankg,

@expertmanofficial Distribution for Linux via AppImage and/or Flatpak/snap store is something I'd like to do further down the line for sure. Supposedly Flutter supports that sort of distribution model but there are a bunch of steps for setting it up.

hankg,
